SUMMARY:A Lifeline for Difficult Times: The Taking Solace Series
DESCRIPTION:Starting this November\, Center for Solace (formerly Brattleboro Area Hospice) & Brooks Memorial Library\nare inspired to begin an 8-month collaboration on the first Wednesday of each month\, from 6-8 pm. \nCome join us for a wide range of conversations\non tender topics\, from Death Cafes\, to film & discussion nights\,\nspeaker panels\, a climate-grief dialogue\, and more. \nTogether we’ll explore some of the challenges of being alive in our time.\nFor instance\, how might we navigate illness\, caregiving\, or loss?\nOr beyond that\, face a much broader anguish for our fragile planet itself?\nBecause we know that at least one form of solace\nstems from staying connected. \nTo quote poet David Whyte\, “Solace is not meant to be\nan answer\, but an invitation\, through the door of pain and difficulty\,\nto the depth of suffering and simultaneous beauty in the world\nthat the strategic mind by itself cannot grasp or make sense of.”   \nWe begin November 5th from 6-8pm\nwith a Death Cafe in the Community Room. \nAnd to find out about further topics\, please follow\nCenter for Solace or Brooks Memorial Library on Facebook:\ncenterforsolace.org\, or brookslibraryvt.org.

SUMMARY:Brattleboro Stamp Club 90th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The Brattleboro Stamp Club will be celebrating its 90th Anniversary on Monday\, 20 October\, 6:00-8:30 PM in the Brooks Memorial Library Community Room. The greater Brattleboro community is invited to join for a special stamp program\, refreshments\, freewheeling conversation\, and philatelic freebies for all ages. 90th anniversary T-shirts and a special stamped\, cacheted envelope (or “cover”) will also be available for sale. \nThe Brattleboro Stamp Club (BSC) gathers on the 3rd Monday of each month\, from 7-9 PM in the Community Room.  It is the only active stamp club in the tri-state area where New Hampshire\, Vermont and Massachusetts meet; the BSC boasts nearly two dozen active members. Members are also located as far away as Pennsylvania\, New Jersey and Virginia courtesy of Zoom. \nBSC members are especially proud that one of America’s first postage stamps was produced in Brattleboro in 1846. Known as a “postmaster provisional stamp”\, this 5¢ stamp was produced by Brattleboro postmaster Frederick N. Palmer in a printing of 500 copies. Used to pay postage originating in Brattleboro and going anywhere in the United States before U.S. stamps began being officially issued in 1847\, there are only 52 copies of this valuable stamp known to exist. \nFor over 50 years\, the Brattleboro Stamp Club has met at Brooks Memorial Library and we are delighted to host this Anniversary Celebration. We hope that the community comes out to celebrate the history of this local group. The event promises to be a fun opportunity to learn more about BSC activities and the fascinating world of stamp hobbists.

DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to this author event with local writer\, Jessie Haas\, for the release of her latest book\, Dearest Blood: A Romance of the Revolution. This novel is inspired by the true story of Fanny Montresor\, a young woman with a secret identity whose love and loyalties crossed both sides of the American Revolution. Set in 1775\, during the turmoil that led to the Westminster Massacre\, and in 1783\, as peace was returning. All are welcome. \nAbout the author:\nJessie Haas grew up in Westminster\, Vt\, on a farm once owned by a Revolutionary War soldier. Her writing career has been dominated by a love of horses and history. She sold her first book\, Keeping Barney\, a month before graduating from Wellesley College. Forty-one books later\, she has award-winning picture books\, poetry\, novels\, and nonfiction to her credit\, including four books about Westminster. She is the president of the Westminster Historical Society\, and an expert on the Westminster Massacre. She owns two Morgan mares\, and continues to farm\, garden\, and ride on the home place.
