SUMMARY:Exploring the Afterlife: Learning from Experts and Personal Experiences
DESCRIPTION:Have you had a near-death experience or communicated with a deceased loved one through a medium? Have you contemplated the possibility of reincarnation or had an experience about a past life? Do you wonder what awaits us in the afterlife? Western culture tends to dismiss or even disparage paranormal phenomena. But evidence is available to answer many questions about the afterlife. \nIn this five-part evening series on Tuesdays from June 17th to July 15th\, we will do three things: 1) read books by experts on near-death experiences\, scientific instruments and experiments in paranormal research\, out-of-body experiences\, and the work of reputable mediums; 2) raise questions and concerns about the evening’s topic; and 3) share personal experiences of paranormal phenomena in a safe environment. Each participant will choose a book from a provided list to report on. Participants are strongly encouraged to attend all sessions. \nThe group will be led by hospice chaplain and former social worker Diane Southard and Valerie Abrahamsen\, author of Paranormal: A New Testament Scholar Looks at the Afterlife (2015). \nParticipants are encouraged to contact Valerie at www.wisdomwordsppf.org/contact/ as soon as possible to obtain the book list and additional information. Adults over 18 are invited!

SUMMARY:POSTPONED  Traces of the Trade Documentary Film - by Katrina Browne
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED \nThis event will take place at a later time.  Thank you for your understanding. \nTRACE IT! FACE IT! LET’S HEAL OUR COMMUNITY! \nFirst time filmmaker Katrina Browne makes a troubling discovery – her New England ancestors were the largest enslavement trading family in U.S. history. She and nine fellow descendants set off to retrace the Triangle Trade from the family’s historic hometown in Rhode Island to enslavement forts in Ghana to sugar plantation ruins in Cuba. Step-by-step\, they answer the vast extent of northern complicity in slavery while also stumbling and stretching their way through the minefield of contemporary race relations. \nThe film aired nationally in 2008 on PBS’ acclaimed non-fiction series\, POV\, and is now serving as a catalyst for education\, dialogue\, and action throughout the U.S. and overseas. Beacon Press has published Tom De Wolfe’s memoir of the journey\, Inheriting the Trade. Visit: www.tracesofthetrade.org and www.tracingcenter.org \nIn addition\, all are welcome for an heart-to-heart dialogue on film and a community healing art activity on the following day\, Wednesday June 25\, from 12:30 – 3:30 PM in Brooks Memorial Library’s Community Room. \nFacilitated by: Naima K Wade\, Project Director\, Teaching Artist of\nLegacies: Reckoning+ Resilience Project ( LRRP) \nFor more event information\, please contact:  naimawade11@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Vermont Environmental Justice Law Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:All are invited to this public information meeting held by the Agency of Natural Resources (ANR) Civil Rights and Environmental Justice Unit (CREJU)  to discuss the Environmental Benefits Spending Guidance (EBSG). \nVermont’s Environmental Justice Law (VT EJ Law) from 2022 requires the Agency to develop guidance – the EBSG – to help designated Vermont state agencies to report on the investments that support communities\, especially those most affected by environmental issues. \nThe guidance explains how agencies should document and share information about the investments that result in environmental benefits for Environmental Justice Focus Populations. The EBSG does not tell each agency what investments they should make. \nThe EBSG is mainly for state agencies that need to follow the VT EJ Law\, however\, the law requires a public comment period. The EBSG is also a resource for anyone interested in how environmental benefits are reported.  ANR’s CREJU encourages the public to share their feedback on this document.  This will be one of two in-person meetings this summer to do that.

SUMMARY:Report-back from the Global March to Gaza
DESCRIPTION:On June 13th\, thousands of people from across the globe gathered in Cairo to march to the border with Gaza and break the Israeli siege and genocide against the people of Gaza…or at least they tried to. The Egyptian regime came down hard on organizers and participants\, thwarting their efforts\, subjecting them to surveillance\, arrests\, beatings\, kidnappings\, and deportation\, preventing them from even peaceably assembling in Cairo. \nBrattleboro resident Fhar Miess was part of the US contingent of the Global March to Gaza and will report back on his experiences there and lessons for organizing in repressive conditions that seem headed our way here. Sumer Mobarak from Washington DC and Lana Bilbo from Kaua’i for Palestine and the Hawaii pod of JVP will also be joining remotely to share their experiences with the March. \nFhar’s blog post reflecting on the Global March to Gaza is here. \nThis is a hybrid event. Masks are requested in-person. \nZoom link will be shared with registrants before the event. Registration can be found here.

SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet in the Quiet Reading Room from 7:00pm – 8:30pm to discuss The Practice\, the Horizon\, and the Chain by Sofia Samatar! \nThe boy was raised as one of the Chained\, condemned to toil in the bowels of a mining ship out among the stars. His whole world changes—literally—when he is yanked “upstairs” and informed he has been given an opportunity to be educated at the ship’s university alongside the elite.Overwhelmed and alone\, the boy forms a bond with the woman he comes to know as “the professor\,” a weary idealist and descendent of the Chained who has spent her career striving for validation from her more senior colleagues\, only to fall short at every turn.Together\, the boy and the woman will embark on a transformative journey to grasp the design of the chains that fetter them both—and are the key to breaking free. \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Monday of every month and is open to curious minds\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.

SUMMARY:One Million Rising Resistance Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a One Million Rising Resistance Gathering. At this local community gathering\, attendees will stand in community together\, ready to take action. They will participate in a lively discussion addressing the real time threat America is facing as we quickly shift away from our democratic values and into an authoritarian regime. We will talk through ways our local community can take action and help stop this through noncooperation techniques. \n**A core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values. We expect hosts to ensure all participants in your event uphold this commitment. We recommend all participants review our safety and security resource before your event: https://indivisi.org/safety**

SUMMARY:Introduction to Buddhist Mindfulness Meditation
DESCRIPTION:This offering will be lead by Bhante Rathana\, a Buddhist monk originally from Sri Lanka and currently residing at Serenity Central of New England in Jacksonville\, Vermont. He has been dedicated to the path of Dhamma since the age of 13\, and his journey includes over two decades of monastic training\, study\, and teaching in Sri Lanka and the United States.\n  \n\nAt these sessions\, Bhante will be offering practical guidance in breathing meditation (ānāpānasati)\, loving-kindness meditation (mettā bhāvanā)\, and walking meditation\, rooted in the original teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Pāli Canon. His approach draws directly from early Buddhist texts\, focusing on mindfulness\, compassion\, and inner peace.\n  \n\nWith gentle\, step-by-step instruction\, Bhante aims to help participants develop calm\, clarity\, and deeper awareness—whether you are new to meditation or wish to strengthen your practice.

SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet in the Quiet Reading Room from 7:00pm – 8:30pm to discuss Hammajang Luck by Makana Yamamoto! \nEdie is done with crime. Eight years behind bars changes a person—costs them too much time with too many of the people who need them most. \nAnd it’s all Angel’s fault. She sold Edie out in what should have been the greatest moment of their lives. Instead\, Edie was shipped off to the icy prison planet spinning far below the soaring skybridges and neon catacombs of Kepler space station—of home—to spend the best part of a decade alone. \nBut then a chance for early parole appears out of nowhere and Edie steps into the pallid sunlight to find none other than Angel waiting—and she has an offer. \nOne last job. One last deal. One last target. The trillionaire tech god they failed to bring down last time. There’s just one thing Edie needs to do—trust Angel again—which also happens to be the last thing Edie wants to do. What could possibly go all hammajang about this plan? \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Monday of every month and is open to curious minds\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.
