SUMMARY:World AIDS Day and The AIDS Memorial Quilt
DESCRIPTION:The AIDS Project of Southern Vermont is honored to host sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt in honor of World AIDS Day.  A 12’ x 12’ section of the iconic Quilt\, including a panel for Ron Squires\, Vermont’s first openly gay legislator\, will be on display in the Main Reading Room at Brooks Memorial Library on Friday\, December 5th\, from 10:00AM–6:00 PM. \nCreated in 1985 and first displayed on the National Mall in 1987\, the AIDS Memorial Quilt has grown to nearly 50\,000 panels honoring more than 110\,000 individuals\, making it the largest community arts project in history. Panel-making continues today\, preserving the stories of those lost and supporting HIV prevention education. \n“We are so excited to bring this piece of history to Southern Vermont\,” says Heather Cutler\, Case Manager at the AIDS Project of Southern Vermont. “It’s important to honor this history and celebrate advances in HIV detection and treatment.” \nPartners in this event include community members impacted by HIV/AIDS; educational resources will be available. SUMMARY:Introduction to Buddhist Mindfulness Meditation
DESCRIPTION:This offering will be led by Bhante Rathana\, a Buddhist monk originally from Sri Lanka and currently residing at Serenity Central of New England in Jacksonville\, Vermont. He has been dedicated to the path of Dhamma since the age of 13\, and his journey includes over two decades of monastic training\, study\, and teaching in Sri Lanka and the United States. \nAt these sessions\, Bhante will be offering practical guidance in breathing meditation (ānāpānasati)\, loving-kindness meditation (mettā bhāvanā)\, and walking meditation\, rooted in the original teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Pāli Canon. His approach draws directly from early Buddhist texts\, focusing on mindfulness\, compassion\, and inner peace. \nWith gentle\, step-by-step instruction\, Bhante aims to help participants develop calm\, clarity\, and deeper awareness—whether you are new to meditation or wish to strengthen your practice.

SUMMARY:Make a Mini-Crankie
DESCRIPTION:What’s A Crankie?  Picture a hand-painted scroll that moves through a wooden box while a performer sings\, plays music\, or tells a story. It’s part folk art\, part theater\, part magic. Workshop attendees will build a miniature Crankie out of a matchbox and matchsticks with a turning mechanism for the scroll. Each participant will design and create the scroll and render it in four images. In the course of two hours\, everyone will create an entire Crankie! This workshop is for participants ages 15 and up. DESCRIPTION:John Van Der Does – an author living in Chester\, Vermont – will share readings from his autobiographical accounts of his experiences in Vietnam.  During the war\, John wrote an extensive interview with the author Anton Wilson\, an article in a French newspaper chronicling the struggles of people living on the barges on the banks of the Seine\, and a book of poetry. \nJohn had been hired to work on a film script with the famous director Jodorosky\, but the chaos involved with this eccentric individual caused him to quit. \nJohn is currently writing a novel whose main characters are a doctoral student and a taxi driver who uncover mysterious links between two literary giants in documents discovered in an attic in France.
