SUMMARY:BEEC Mud Season Speaker Series: Celebrating Community Science
DESCRIPTION:Spring in Vermont means one thing: mud season! It’s also a perfect time to discover how you can meaningfully contribute to science and conservation in our community. Join Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center for this second session in an inspiring Mud Season Speaker Series featuring experts and enthusiasts who will share stories\, tips\, and inspiration for getting involved in community science. \nThis second session brings James S. Andrews\, Vermont’s only full-time herpetologist\, to Brooks Memorial Library to offer an engaging presentation: “Vernal Pool Reptiles and Amphibians and How You Can Help Document Them.” \nJim will show us a variety of frogs\, salamanders\, snakes\, and turtles (herptiles) in our area that depend on vernal pools or similar habitat. The southeastern corner of Vermont supports some very rare pool-associated reptiles and amphibians that we should be looking and listening for and reporting any time they are observed. He will also identify some fairly common amphibians that need to be reported from certain towns in our area (Spring Peeper in Marlboro). He will introduce us to these herptiles and encourage us to help document the herptiles that we see.\n—\nBe sure to mark your calendar for the last session on April 15th\, when we close out this series with another special presenter.

SUMMARY:Vermont Farm Show - Revisioning Community Gathering
DESCRIPTION:The Vermont Farm Show has been one of Vermont’s longest standing events in support of agricultural and land-based enterprises. The last Farm Show was held in 2020 and the Vermont Farm Show Board of Trustees are looking for community input to help define a farm show that can successfully serve Vermont’s needs while also being financially viable. Everyone is invited to participate in the information gathering process on the Vermont Farm Show’s future. Folks from across the state and beyond are being asked to engage and all ideas are welcome. \nIn addition to in-person gatherings\, virtual focus groups have been held and a survey has been widely disbursed. The Vermont Farm Show Board is calling on farmers of all scales & types\, farm workers\, agricultural students\, educators\, and professionals\, farm service providers\, and anyone who supports Vermont’s food system and working landscape to join in conversation about the future of the Vermont Farm Show. This gathering is one of five occurring across the state this winter. Attendees will connect with others\, engage in facilitated conversation\, and offer their input on what kind of Farm Show can best serve Vermont’s changing agricultural needs. Snacks will be provided. \nFor more information visit\, www.vtfarmshow.com.

SUMMARY:The Nelson Legacy Project presents "Eyes on Freedom" an audio documentary about nonviolent activists Wally and Juanita Nelson
DESCRIPTION:The Nelson Legacy project invites you to a listening event “Eyes on Freedom”\, a one-hour audio documentary about Wally & Juanita Nelson produced by Carrie and Michael Kline of “Talking Across the Lines”. \n“Eyes on Freedom” is an audio tapestry that weaves together voices of people who knew and were influenced by the Nelsons. The audio documentary also includes vintage recordings of the Nelsons themselves. \nAfter decades of involvement in the civil rights and antiwar movements\, Wally and Juanita Nelson lived just south of the Vermont border in Franklin County\, Massachusetts starting in 1974. They lived there until Wally died in 2002 and Juanita in 2015. They had a significant impact on our region through their advocacy of local agriculture\, land trusts\, war tax refusal\, and simple living. \nNonviolence was the umbrella concept that underscored everything they did. For the Nelsons\, nonviolence represented so much more than a tactic to be used in a conflict situation. While it could include freedom rides\, boycotts\, lunch counter sit-ins\, war tax refusal\, and other forms of noncooperation\, it was also a way of life\, a way of being in the world\, a way of relating to people and to all of nature. It was a measuring stick they used to evaluate their actions and choices. Nonviolence encompassed dignity\, humanity\, truth\, justice\, and freedom and it was a lens through which to view the violence of our modern-day economic system. \nFor more information\, contact Bob Bady at: bobbady@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:A Literary Cocktail Hour – The Invisible Doctrine: The Secret History of Neoliberalism
DESCRIPTION:The March Cocktail Hour is a collaborative ONLINE event with our host\, the Windham World Affairs Council\, and partner organizations: Vermont Independent Media\, the Vermont Humanities\, The Latchis\, and Everyone’s Books\, along with Brooks Memorial Library. \nThe book to be discussed is a Times UK #1 bestseller\, “The Invisible Doctrine: The Secret History of Neoliberalism” with authors George Monbiot & Peter Hutchison. \nGeorge Monbiot and filmmaker Peter Hutchison show how a fringe philosophy in the 1930s—championing competition as the defining feature of humankind—was systematically hijacked by a group of wealthy elites\, determined to guard their fortunes and power. Think tanks\, corporations\, the media\, university departments and politicians were all deployed to promote the idea that people are consumers\, rather than citizens. \nA community screening of The Invisible Doctrine documentary followed by a Q & A with filmmaker Peter Hutchison is scheduled the next day\, 3/15\, at 5 PM at the Latchis. \nTo register and receive the Zoom link for the 3/14 Literary Cocktail Hour\, please visit: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN__FJqLOn_TgOzySUxytRurw#/registration

SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:Join the Sci-Fi Reading Group in the Quiet Reading Room from 7:00pm – 8:30pm to discuss Tentacle by Rita Indiana: \nPlucked from her life on the streets of post-apocalyptic Santo Domingo\, young maid Acilde Figueroa finds herself at the heart of a Santería prophecy: only she can travel back in time and save the ocean – and humanity – from disaster. But first she must become the man she always was – with the help of a sacred anemone. Tentacle is an electric novel with a big appetite and a brave vision\, plunging headfirst into questions of climate change\, technology\, Yoruba ritual\, queer politics\, poverty\, sex\, colonialism and contemporary art. Bursting with punk energy and lyricism\, it’s a restless\, addictive trip: The Tempest meets the telenovela. \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Monday of every month and is open to curious minds\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.

SUMMARY:Vermont Public's "Join or Die" Film Screening and Community-Building Mixer
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome Vermont Public to Brooks Memorial Library for a mini film screening and social hour! First\, dive into a 45-minute excerpt of the highly acclaimed 2023 documentary Join or Die by Pete and Rebecca Davis. Join or Die is a film about why you should join a club—and why the fate of America depends on it. Joined by Hillary Clinton\, Priya Parker\, and others\, Robert Putnam\, author of Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community\, will explore three urgent civic questions: What makes democracy work? Why is American democracy in crisis? And\, most importantly… What can we do about it? \nFollowing the screening\, join us for a social hour to practice what we’ve learned. Whether you’re passionate about your favorite pastime and want to connect with others or just looking to meet new people in your community\, we’ll have prompts and icebreakers to help spark authentic connections. \nThis event is part of a series of Join or Die screenings and community-building mixers throughout Vermont this winter. \nRegistration is required. More information can be found on VP’s website\, HERE.

SUMMARY:Gifted Women Writers of the Gilded Age: A Women’s History Month Presentation with Elayne Clift\, M.A.
DESCRIPTION:“But I shouldn’t have thought anything in your life worth writing about”\n“The Artist’s most essential quality is masterly execution”\n“To write\, one must have a penetrative imagination” \nIs it any wonder that progressive women writers born in the Gilded Age\, which spanned the second half of the 19th century into the early 19th century\, began to look at the world through the lens of gender and put pen to paper? Beginning with an overview of the Gilded Age\, this Women’s History Month event explores women writers who pioneered a body of literature that provided insight into key issues that re-shaped America in critical ways. Their stories\, novels\, essays and social criticism continue to inspire women writers and readers as they offer models that lead to an equal\, fair\, and humane world. \nElayne Clift is an award-winning writer\, lecturer and workshop leader. Her work has appeared in various periodicals\, newspapers\, magazines\, and anthologies. She is a columnist for several New England newspapers and has published memoirs and poetry\, short stories\, and anthology collections. She has taught women’s studies\, literature and other humanities courses at several colleges and universities and currently facilitates reading\, writing and discussion groups with adult participants at continuing education programs.

DESCRIPTION:Come and connect with others who are interested in working on plans to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States in 2026. \nThis monthly meeting space on the 4th Wednesdays is dedicated for those who would like the opportunity to connect\, collaborate\, and work on projects that align with Vermont’s 250th Anniversary Commission’s mission to “…inspire all Vermonters to learn from the history\, legacy\, and context of the past to build strong Vermont communities for the future.” \nThe space is being hosted by Brooks Memorial Library\, Vermont Independent Media (The Commons) and Windham World Affairs Council\, with support from the Vermont Humanities Council. We are already working together on a collaboration entitled\, ‘Examining American Identity and Leadership in a Changing World – and have joined America 250\, a national initiative asking communities to plan for how to commemorate the 250th year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Its mission is to provide opportunities for all Americans to pause and reflect on our nation’s past & present\, honor the contributions of all Americans\, and look to the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond.
