SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet in the Quiet Reading Room from 7:00pm – 8:30pm to discuss Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky \nRed Schuhart is a stalker\, one of those young rebels who are compelled\, in spite of extreme danger\, to venture illegally into the Zone to collect the mysterious artifacts that the alien visitors left scattered around. His life is dominated by the place and the thriving black market in the alien products. But when he and his friend Kirill go into the Zone together to pick up a “full empty\,” something goes wrong. And the news he gets from his girlfriend upon his return makes it inevitable that he’ll keep going back to the Zone\, again and again\, until he finds the answer to all his problems. \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Monday of every month and is open to curious minds\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.

SUMMARY:Community Talk - with Lama Tenzin Yignyen
DESCRIPTION:As part of Lama Tenzin Yignyen’s week-long visit to Brattleboro\, the venerable Tibetan Monk will be speak about the spiritual significance of the mandala he will be creating in our Main Reading Room throughout the week. \nThis sacred art form symbolizes love\, compassion\, generosity\, wisdom\, and appreciation\, and serves as a profound testament to the beauty and interconnectedness of all beings. \nLama Tenzin Yignyen\, has been making sand mandalas for over forty years. He explains: “The Mandala is a reflection or expression of our inner self– our inner positive qualities. It presents us with opportunities to cherish those qualities and a means to rid ourselves of negative qualities\, so we may be happy and peaceful. The message of the Mandala includes all the important elements that can make us a happy and caring person. The construction is considered as a blessing for the area and for the people who live where it is constructed.” \nThis week-long event is sponsored by River Gallery School (RGS) in partnership with Brooks Memorial Library. This event is made possible by the Vermont Community Foundation.  It’s free and open to the public. All are welcome.

SUMMARY:Closing Ceremony - with Lama Tenzin Yignyen
DESCRIPTION:As part of the week-long visit of Lama Tenzin Yignyen\,  there will be a formal closing ceremony in which Lama Tenzin will intentionally destroy the delicate Sand Mandala of Compassion – Avalokiteshvara – that he patiently created throughout the week. \nDuring this dismantling ceremony\,  the public will be invited to help sweep the sand into a vase. Breaking the circle of the mandala symbolizes the impermanence of all things and serves as a poignant reminder of the transient nature of existence. \nAs part of the closing\, we will walk from the library down Main Street to the Whetstone pathway\, where Lama Tenzin will return the sand to the earth by offering it to the brook.  All are welcome to attend this meaningful ceremony. \nThis week-long event is sponsored by River Gallery School (RGS) in partnership with Brooks Memorial Library. This event is made possible by the Vermont Community Foundation.

SUMMARY:From Overthrow to Blowback: How U.S. led Regime Change Has Historically Sown the Seeds of Instability and Backlash
DESCRIPTION:“Global Blowback: Understanding the Long Tail of U.S. Intervention and Regime Change.”  Happening at 118 Gallery\, Elliot Street\, Brattleboro. \nAs part of the America 250 series\, Windham World Affairs Council in collaboration with Brooks Memorial Library\, Vermont Independent Media and the Vermont Humanities  is creating a two-year series around the theme of  global blowback. \nThe first speaker in the series will be esteemed author and journalist – Stephen Kinzer. \nKinzer is an award-winning foreign correspondent who has covered more than 50 countries on five continents. His articles and books have led the Washington Post to place him “among the best in popular foreign policy storytelling.” \nKinzer spent more than 20 years working for the New York Times\, most of it as a foreign correspondent. His foreign postings placed him at the center of historic events and\, at times\, in the line of fire. \nThis event is happening at 118 Elliot Gallery. There is a $10 suggested donation.  No one\, however\, will be turned away for lack of funds. \nRegistration link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/global-blowback-the-long-tail-of-us-intervention-and-regime-change-tickets-1305915230609?aff=oddtdtcreator \n  \nMore about the Global Blowback series: \n“Why do they hate us?” That’s the question that many US citizens express in response to political and terrorist attacks on the U.S. Many students and citizens do not understand the ways that U.S. foreign policy\, particular during periods of aggressive military intervention and regime change\, have sowed long seeds of instability\, authoritarianism\, migration\, and resentment.  While we in the US have a short-term historical memory or lack knowledge of historic interventions\, the rest of the world has a long memory for 20th century U.S. intervention and regime change. \nCentral to deepening a global understanding of these events is the concept of “blowback.” The US intelligence community defines blowback as the “unintended consequences resulting from covert or direct action.” In his 2000 book\, Blowback: The Costs and Consequences of American Empire\, the late Chalmers Johnson\, who was a eminent scholar of Asia\, former CIA consultant and self-described “cold warrior\,” described the blowback concept: \nOfficials of the Central Intelligence Agency first invented [the term blowback] for their own internal use… [It] refers to the unintended consequences of policies that were kept secret from the American people. What the daily press reports as the malign acts of ‘terrorists’ or ‘drug lords’ or ‘rogue states’ or ‘illegal arms merchants’ often turn out to be blowback from earlier American operations.” \nFor example\, the US covertly aided in the overthrow of a democratically-elected government in Iran in 1953\, which led to the 1979 Iranian revolution and taking of the U.S. embassy and hostages –and two generations of instability. \nOver the next two years\, WWAC will host conversations around significant anniversaries of U.S. intervention and examples of long-term consequences or “blowback.”  We propose a series of educational events\, some tied to these anniversaries (but not rigidly). \n

SUMMARY:District 8 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please join Brattleboro District 8 Chair Gary Stroud and District 8 RTM member Cristina ShayOnye for an important community discussion about the town budget and how it will affect property taxes. This meeting is a chance for Brattleboro residents—especially those in District 8\, represented by Rep. Mollie Burke—to learn about and share their views on the newly revised Town Budget coming before Representative Town Meeting at the end of May. Come to ask questions\, share your thoughts\, and ensure your voice is heard! This is a valuable opportunity to connect with your Town Meeting representatives before the town budget is voted on.
