DESCRIPTION:In Robin’s Song\, Robin\, dealing with loss and anxiety\, leaves Brooklyn to come to live in a small Vermont town with her cousin Darcey.  Through nature\, music and poetry\, the tweens bond\, while Robin learns skills to deal with her emotions. \nAuthor Lynn Levine will speak about why she wrote Robin’s Song and about her personal story of dealing with mental health challenges. \nCarol Compton\, Education Programs Director for Brattleboro Music Center\, will discuss how music both heals and empowers and their approach to helping students deal with their emotional self. \nAnn Gengarelly\, a poet\, who runs the Poetry Studio\, will talk about the ways poetry supports the emotional health of young people and empowers them. \nMichael Clough\, Executive Director of Museum of Natural History will talk about their approach to the topic of how nature heals and empowers\, specifically focusing on their approach to working with preteens.  He will bring a live animal. \nLynn Levine has worked with children and adults in classrooms and libraries and has taken thousands of people into the forest to share her love of nature. She finds that connecting people to the forest though teaching about the outdoors is a powerful way to help others feel the same. SUMMARY:Freedom To Be: Queer Community Crafting
DESCRIPTION:Calling all LGBTQ+ families\, adults\, and youth! \nJoin the ACLU of Vermont\, Out in the Open\, and Brooks Memorial Public Library on Monday October 21st for an evening of queer community crafting! \nFolks are welcome to come and explore what freedom\, autonomy\, and joy mean to them through hanging out and making art. This collaborative project\, made up of a series of quilt-like panels\, acts as a vessel to uplift the voices of queer and trans Vermonters. Attendees can to contribute to a group panel\, create their own individual panel\, or simply craft in a way that feels best to them. \nSnacks & supplies will be provided and all ages are welcome! Stop by or join us for the entire time- we’d love to see you! \nThis queer community craft is a part of a national ACLU campaign which centers the voices of queer and trans people in America. It will culminate in the installation of a monument in Washington D.C. in the spring of 2025. The installation will be comprised of hundreds of quilt-like panels from across the country\, including those created right here in Brattleboro! This campaign acts as a reminder of the hope and possibility that exists when people have the freedom to be themselves.

DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet Monday\, October 21st\, in the Quiet Reading Room from 7-8:30 pm to discuss Counterweight by Djuna. \n“On the island of Patusan—and much to the ire of the Patusan natives—the Korean conglomerate LK is constructing an elevator into Earth’s orbit\, gradually turning this one-time tropical resort town into a teeming travel hub: a gateway to and from our planet. Up in space\, holding the elevator’s “spider cable” taut\, is a mass of space junk known as the Counterweight. And it’s here that lies the key—a trove of personal data left by LK’s former CEO\, of dire consequence to the company’s\, and humanity’s\, future. \nRacing up the elevator to retrieve the data is a host of rival forces: LK’s disillusioned Chief of External Affairs; an unwitting everyman at the center of an investigation; the former CEO’s brilliant niece and his power-hungry son; and a violent officer from LK’s Security Division. They’re all caught in a labyrinth of fake identities\, neuro-implant “Worms\,” and old political grievances held by the Patusan Liberation Front.” \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Monday of every month and is open to curious minds of all ages\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.
