DESCRIPTION:The BRATTLEBORO GREAT BOOKS GROUP will be discussing SONS and LOVERS\, by D.H. Lawrence\, on MONDAY\, FEBRUARY 2nd\, 2026\, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.\, in the Mezzanine Quiet Reading Room of the Brooks Memorial Library. The January meeting was cancelled\, and reading/discussion was deferred due to inclement weather and illness of several members. \n\n\nSons and Lovers is one of the most perceptive novels on the dialectical relationship between mothers and sons (and daughters\, too)! His first major novel\, this work closely parallels Lawrence’s own life. \n—————————————————————– \n\n\nFor Mon. March 2nd\, the group will be discussing Dostoyevsky’s THE DEVILS (a.k.a. The DAEMONS or THE POSSESSED)\, one of his most complicated\, and messy\, novels. How can I describe it? As an adult\, existential “CAT in a HAT\,” but with the anarchic “Thing One” and “Thing Two” multiplied to perhaps a half-dozen malevolent “Things!” Get started early\, as this is 650 pp.\, complete with Russian names and patronames\, is worth the effort for its deep psychological\, philosophical and religious insights. \n\n\nFor further information\, email Michael Landis at emagicmtman@gmail.com\, or call him at (802) 257-1851. DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet in the Quiet Reading Room from 7:00pm – 8:30pm to discuss Metallic Realms by Lincoln Michel! \nPerennially single\, socially awkward\, and drowning in debt\, Michael Lincoln finds his life has turned out nothing like the intergalactic lives of the pulp heroes of his youth. But these are pedestrian concerns—he has a higher calling\, and that is to preserve for all posterity the greatest series in the history of the written word: The Star Rot Chronicles. Written collectively by Michael’s best (and perhaps only) friend Taras K. Castle and his misfit science fiction writing group\, the Orb 4\, the stories follow Captain Baldwin and his fearless crew on their mind-bending adventures across the Metallic Realms\, from solar whales swallowing suns at the edge of spacetime to extraterrestrial romances and interstellar wars. These masterpieces have gone tragically unpublished—until now. But the most urgent story Michael must tell takes place in the more intimate (if no less dramatic) confines of literary Brooklyn. Behind the greatest universe ever created\, there are the all-too-mortal people who wrote it. As Michael chronicles the personal melodramas of the Orb 4 as well as the fun house reflections in their fiction\, the line between real and unreal becomes dangerously thin\, and the true reasons for the group’s fallout begin to emerge. As he labors away in hiding\, Michael has just one mission: to bring the Metallic Realms to the world. No matter the cost. \nPlease note that this SFRG will be meeting on the fourth Monday of the month! Lawrence. \nFor Monday\, February 2nd\, the group will be reading and discussing The DAEMONS* by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. (warning: *”The DEVILS” a.k.a. several other names\, is 800+ pp. so get an early start). Participants meet from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Mezzanine Quiet Reading Room of the Brooks Memorial Library\, usually on the first Monday night of the month. If the meeting is cancelled due to inclement weather\, reading is pushed back to the following month. \n\nFor those with any visual challenges or limitations\,  there is an audiobook version of Sons and Lovers\, available gratis (and without commercials!) on YouTube\, read by actor Tony Foster (in a Yorkshire accent!).  It comes highly  highly recommended.

Faced with constant threats of starvation and destruction in the treacherous minefield of interstellar space\, Jacklyn’s crew has reached their breaking point. As unrest begins to spread throughout the ship’s Wards\, a new threat emerges\, picking off crew members in grim\, bloody fashion. Jacklyn and her team must hunt down the ship’s unknown intruder if they have any hope of making it back to their solar system alive. \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Monday of every month and is open to curious minds\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.

SUMMARY:Make a Mini-Crankie
DESCRIPTION:What’s A Crankie?  Picture a hand-painted scroll that moves through a wooden box while a performer sings\, plays music\, or tells a story. It’s part folk art\, part theater\, part magic. Workshop attendees will build a miniature Crankie out of a matchbox and matchsticks with a turning mechanism for the scroll. Each participant will design and create the scroll and render it in four images. In the course of two hours\, everyone will create an entire Crankie! This workshop is for participants ages 15 and up.
