SUMMARY:David Sipress and Tad Friend - Brattleboro Literary Festival
DESCRIPTION:David Sipress was born and raised in New York City. He graduated from Williams College in 1968 and went on to study Russian History in the Department of Soviet Studies at Harvard University. He left Harvard before completing his degree to pursue a career as a cartoonist and has been staff cartoonist since 1998 for The New Yorker\, where he has published nearly 700 cartoons. \nHe lectures widely on cartooning\, and his autobiographical writing has appeared frequently on newyorker.com.  He lives in Brooklyn with his wife\, Ginny Shubert\, an attorney and activist who works on issues of health and housing. \nLibrary Journal calls his latest book\, What’s So Funny: A Cartoonist’s Memoir. “An intimate and engaging memoir by an artist who understands that personal thoughts and feelings often lead to remarkable ideas.” The New York Times called it\, “An endearingly vulnerable tale of being molded by one’s family of origin…economic and amiable (and occasionally devastating). \n\n\nTad Friend is a longtime staff writer for The New Yorker. His memoir\, Cheerful Money: Me\, My Family\, and the Last Days of Wasp Splendor\, was chosen as one of the year’s best books by The Washington Post\, Chicago Tribune\, San Francisco Chronicle\, and NPR. His new memoir\, In The Early Times\, was published in May. \nHe lives in Brooklyn with his wife\, Amanda Hesser and their twins\, Walker and Addison. \n

DESCRIPTION:With Reuben Jackson\nThe ever-changing music that Miles Davis recorded from 1969 to 1975 angered and bewildered many critics and fans\, who accused the trumpeter of “selling out.” Jazz archivist and poet Reuben Jackson shares how recordings from Davis’ “Electric Period”—including 1974’s Get Up With It—prove otherwise. \n \nReuben Jackson is the Archivist with the University of The District of Columbia’s Felix E. Grant Jazz Archives. For 20 years he was archivist and curator with the Smithsonian Institution’s Duke Ellington Collection. He was also host of Vermont Public Radio’s Friday Night Jazz from 2012 until 2018. His music reviews have appeared in The Washington Post\, Jazziz\, Jazz Times\, and on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. He is also the author of two books of poetry- 1990’s fingering the keys (Gut Punch Press)-and 2019’s Scattered Clouds (Alan Squire Publishing). \nThe First Wednesdays series includes in-person events in Fall and Spring with virtual events in the Winter. Teaming up with a Research Transport vessel named ART (you don’t want to know what the “A” stands for)\, Murderbot heads to the mining facility where it went rogue.\nWhat it discovers will forever change the way it thinks… ” \nThe book is available in physical and digital format from the library and all ages are welcome to attend\, even if they haven’t read the book! We are also open to suggestions for other great sci-fi titles to read at future meet-ups. \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets on the third Monday of every month from 7-8:30pm in the Quiet Reading Room at the library.

DESCRIPTION:Join fellow sci-fi lovers for the Brooks Memorial Library Sci-Fi Reading Group! The group will be diving into some of the best new books the genre has to offer! \nWe will be kicking things off on Monday\, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Brooks Memorial Library. We will be discussing “All Systems Red” by Martha Wells\, the first novella in her Murderbot Diaries series. A synopsis of the novella is as follows: \n In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future\, a self-aware Security Unit hacks its own governor module while shadowing a team of scientists conducting surface tests on a distant planet. Disgusted by the humans\, it could go on a rampage and live up to its self-assigned moniker\, “Murderbot”\, but it would honestly rather be binge watching TV on a loop. All Murderbot wants is to get through the day.
