SUMMARY:Brattleboro Great Books Group
DESCRIPTION:In August\, the Brattleboro Great Books Group will be discussing Elizabeth Strout’s Pulitzer Award winning novel “Olive Kitteridge” on Monday\, August 4th\, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.\, in the (not-so-quiet) Quiet Reading Room/Room D on the mezzanine of Brooks Memorial Library. Besides the Library’s copies\, several copies are available for purchase at Everyone’s Books on Elliott St. (270 pp. plus study questions\, $18) \n“At times stern\, at other times patient\, at times perceptive\, at other times in sad denial\, Olive Kitteridge\, a retired schoolteacher\, deplores the changes in her little town of Crosby\, Maine\, and in the world at large\, but she doesn’t always recognizes the changes in those around her: a lounge musician…\,  a former student…\,t\,..\, Olive’s own adult child…and her husband… \nAs the townspeople grapple with their problems\, mild and dire\, Olive is brought into a deeper understanding of herself and her life–sometimes painfully\, but always with ruthless honesty. “Olive Kitteridge” offers profound insights into the human condition–its conflicts\, its tragedies and joys\, and the endurance it requires.” (from the back cover blurb) \nIn September\, choose your favorite Emily Dickinson poem  (or two or three) and read it aloud; then we will discuss. Emily Dickinson favorite poems are also on reserve at Everyone’s Books. \nFor further information\, call Michael Landis at (802) 257-1851\, or email him at emagicmtman@gmail.com
