Questions can be asked and the presenters will do their best to answer them and to offer a cooperative environment to talk about subjects which can often be difficult. SUMMARY:Mud Season Speaker Series with David Allen Sibley – Birding for Science: Uncovering the Mysteries of Our Feathered Neighbors
DESCRIPTION:In this final speaker series program co-hosted with Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center (BEEC)\, David Allen Sibley\, renowned ornithologist and illustrator\, invites backyard birders to step into the world of scientific discovery. While birdwatching is often seen as a leisurely hobby\, Sibley will reveal how everyday observations can contribute to cutting-edge science. Sibley will explore the exciting and often overlooked mysteries surrounding even the most common bird species. \nDrawing from his own work and experience\, Sibley will illustrate how birders can develop a deeper connection to the birds around them by becoming “scientists in their own backyards.” He’ll share examples of how birding has led to surprising discoveries\, such as new migration routes or shifts in species distribution caused by climate change. Sibley will stress the importance of collaboration in the birding community\, showing how every observation matters and how collectively\, birders are helping to build a richer\, more comprehensive understanding of bird life. \nIn the end\, Sibley’s talk will not only encourage birders to look at their backyard birds with fresh eyes\, but also inspire them to become active participants in the ongoing work to protect these fascinating creatures and the habitats they rely on. \nThe Sibley Guide to Birds\, published in 2000\, was the realization of a lifelong dream for David Allen Sibley\, who began painting birds when he was seven years old and has continued painting them for over three decades. The Sibley Guide to Birds contains over 6\,600 original illustrations by Sibley\, now recognized as America’s leading ornithologist/illustrator. The Sibley Guide to Birds became the fastest-selling bird book in history\, earning Sibley the moniker “the Beatle of birding” among the press. Stories about Sibley have run in The New York Times\, Audubon\, Time\, and Science\, and the author has appeared on ABC World News Tonight and on NPR’s Science Friday and The Connection. David Allen Sibley has been called the heir apparent to John James Audubon and Roger Tory Peterson\, and his long-awaited guidebook immediately became the gold standard for bird identification when it was published. \nRegistration is preferred\, but not required. DESCRIPTION:Over 90 poems will be going up in downtown Brattleboro (and for the first time there will be copies of some poems at Canal Street locations)\, by area poets\, as well as from poets throughout Vermont and the tri-state region. They will be displayed in shops and other locations throughout April\, to celebrate National Poetry Month\, and be up for the first Gallery Walk of the season\, May 2nd. \nFor this April 19th event\, a self-selected group of about fifteen poets from PAT will give short readings\, that include their posted poems.  All are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:All are invited to come and witness Buddhist Monk Lama Tenzin Yignyen as he creates Avalokiteshvara\, the Mandala of Compassion\, in the Main Reading Room at Brooks Memorial Library from April 21 – 25. \nLama Tenzin will create the intricate sand mandala during the day between 10 AM – 4 PM\, while library patrons and the public visit. \nAt the end of the week\, community members are welcome to take part in a dismantling ceremony on Friday\, 04/25 from 10:30 AM where the sand of the mandala will be returned to the earth. \nSand mandalas are made by Tibetan monks as a form of meditation to develop the transcendent values of love and compassion in people’s hearts. \nLama Tenzin of Geneva\, NY – retired from Hobart and William Smith Colleges where he taught Buddhist studies for decades – is being hosted by The River Gallery School of Art. \nLama Tenzin will also present a Dharma Talk  on Wednesday\, April 23 from 5:30 – 7 PM. \nThis week-long event is sponsored by River Gallery School (RGS) in partnership with Brooks Memorial Library. This event is made possible by the Vermont Community Foundation.  It’s free and open to the public. All are welcome.
