SUMMARY:Becoming Wolf: The Eastern Coyote in New England
DESCRIPTION:An eastern coyote is defined as much by its western coyote ancestry as by the DNA contribution from the eastern wolf. Coyotes in the northeast vary physically and behaviorally from their smaller western relatives while still maintaining their incredible adaptability. This program delves into the ecology and behavior of this creature\, its indefatigability\, and how humans must adapt to live with the coyote. \nOn the horizon\, however\, is a native carnivore that fled the northeast during wolf removal and now may be trying to return: The eastern wolf. A look-alike to the coyote\, it has been killed mistakenly for its similarity of appearance to the coyote. We’ll talk about how the wolf and coyote might negotiate a truce in the northeast and how we might do the same.  This program is sponsored by Protect Our Wildlife (https://www.protectourwildlifevt.org/). \n  \nAbout Christine Schadler\, presenter: \nChris’ interest in wild canids began in the 1970s as a volunteer at Wolf Park in Battleground\, Indiana. This opportunity and others inspired an eventual Masters in Conservation Biology at Antioch University in Keene. Her thesis focused on the Natural Recovery of the Eastern Timber Wolf in Michigan. Chris lived in Michigan and Minnesota during the early 1980s where her research into the gray wolf continued and her speaking career began. \nBeginning in the early 1990s\, Chris taught Forestry\, Wolf Ecology and Environmental Conservation in the Natural Resources Department at UNH. She also instructed and mentored adult degree candidates in the UNH System at Granite State College. \nWhile wolf recovery was the focus of her early work\, Chris’ attention shifted to the Eastern Coyote when she and her flock of sheep moved to New England. She is now the NH and VT Representative for Project Coyote\, a national organization promoting coexistence with coyotes. Chris (with John Harrigan) co-founded the NH Wildlife Coalition which aims to defend predators. She currently Chairs the Webster Conservation Commission and is a member of the Northeast Wolf Recovery Alliance.

SUMMARY:Vermont Movies? Why? And How? - with Jay Craven
DESCRIPTION:For five decades Jay Craven has written\, produced\, and directed character-driven films deeply rooted in Vermont and New England\, including five films based on the works of Howard Frank Mosher. His latest film\, Lost Nation\, digs into the parallel stories of Ethan Allen and the pioneering Black Guilford poet Lucy Terry Prince. \nIn this Vermont Humanities Speakers Bureau talk\, Craven will describe working with actors such as Rip Torn\, Tantoo Cardinal\, Kris Kristofferson and Michael J. Fox\, and share the satisfactions and challenges that come from a deep immersion into place-based narrative.\n….. \nAbout the presenter: Kingdom County Productions co-founder\, Jay Craven\, is an award-winning director\, writer\, and producer\, whose narrative films include High Water (1989); Where the Rivers Flow North (1993); A Stranger in the Kingdom (1997); In Jest (1999); The Year that Trembled (2003); Disappearances (2006); Northern Borders (2012); Wetware (2018); and Blood Brothers (2021)\, and Martin Eden (2023). \nCraven also directed\, produced\, and co-wrote the 2005 Emmy Award-winning public television comedy series\, Windy Acres\, along with four episodes of the Queen City Radio Hour—a comedy and music variety show performed before a live audience and broadcast over Vermont Public Radio. His documentaries include After the Fog: Interviews with Combat Veterans (2006); Dawn of the People (1984); and Gayleen (1985). \nHe is currently touring Lost Nation\, a new film set during the turbulent period of the American Revolution in Vermont. Craven writes regular arts and public issue commentaries and is also writing a memoir.

Created as a service-learning project at the University of Vermont (UVM) by Adriana Sanchez-Gutierrez\, Ph.D.\, lecturer of Spanish in the Department of Romance Languages and Cultures\, Hispanic Voices aims to build awareness of cultural differences in Vermont and celebrate the resilience and contributions of the state’s Hispanic community. \nHispanic Vermonters shared their life stories with UVM students\, who\, through these conversations\, recognized the significance and impact of Vermont’s Hispanic Community. Students then created five-minute interviews that honor and reflect on these life stories\, cultural heritage\, and lived experiences. According to UVM student Olivia Ciocca\, where the interviewee was from influenced the content of the interview: “We made sure to ask questions about what it was like to be a Spanish speaker in Vermont and to learn about how they hold on to their culture.” \nThe portraits are now on display through October 16th in the Main Reading Room during the library’s open hours.

SUMMARY:What the Constitution Means For Us - with Meg Mott
DESCRIPTION:The Preamble of the Constitution has its own particular grammar. In that singular sentence We\, the People define what we want from government: Justice\, domestic Tranquility\, a common defence\, the general Welfare and the Blessings of Liberty. The rest of the Constitution provides the means to achieve those noble ends. It’s not enough to say what we want. We have to design a government that saves us from ourselves.\n \n\n\nThis Constitution Day (09/17) presentation considers whether or not the Constitution is up to the task. This is not a new question. Some antebellum abolitionists referred to the Constitution as “an agreement with Hell.” Others said it was the only effective tool against the wickedness of political leaders. Without the Constitution the People have no power against the State. Finally\, we’ll ask ourselves how we might better dwell in the Constitution in order to achieve a “more perfect union.”\n \n\nThis program is part of The America 250 Town Hall Series\, a collaboration with Brooks Memorial Library\, Windham World Affairs Council\, and Vermont Independent Media\, publisher of The Commons\, and is made possible\, in part\, through a generous grant from the Vermont Humanities Council.\n \n….\n\n \n About the presenter: After twenty years of teaching political theory and constitutional law to Marlboro College undergraduates\, Meg Mott has taken her love of argument to the general public. She attended the University of New Hampshire in the 1970s and is currently teaching at Keene State College. Meg’s award-winning series\, Debating Our Rights\, on the first ten amendments\, brings civil discussions on contentious issues to public libraries and colleges.

SUMMARY:Windham County Genealogy Interest Group September Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Discover Your Revolutionary War Ancestors & Researching in the Vermont Historical Society Portal \n\nThe fall meeting of the Windham County Genealogy Interest Group will focus on “Discover Your Revolutionary War Ancestors” & “Researching in the Vermont Historical Society Portal”\, on Saturday\, September 20\, 2025\, from 10:30 AM to 12:30PM\, by Zoom and at Brooks Memorial Library. In case of inclement weather\, it will be Zoom only. Free and open to all. \nPlease register at this link: https://bit.ly/WCGIG2025 . A Zoom link will be sent before the meeting. For those people in the local vicinity\, an in-person meeting will also be conducted at Brooks Memorial Library\, 224 Main St.\, Brattleboro\, Vermont. \n “Discover Your Revolutionary War Ancestors” \nThis year begins the 250th anniversary of the Revolution. If an ancestor was in America at the time of the Revolution (1775-1783) and was of age to serve\, now is the best time to find possible military service\, land bounty\, and pension records. Even if a lineal ancestor did not serve\, perhaps a relative did\, and records might include information about others in the family. Using databases such as the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Genealogical Research System and resources at the National Archives\, as well as tools at Ancestry and Family Search should yield information about ancestors that is found nowhere else. “This is a wonderful opportunity to connect your family story to the founding of our country”\, said Wayne Blanchard who will lead the session. \n“Researching Vermont Through the Vermont Historical Society Website” \nThe Vermont Historical Society was chartered in 1n 1838 as an independent non-profit dedicated to exploring the rich heritage of Vermont. The Vermont History Center is located in Barre\, Vermont and the Vermont History Museum is located in Montpelier. Both institution contain over 30\,000 items to assist the general public and researchers. The VHS website provides access to these items through its library catalog\, its museum catalog\, digital resources\, Vermont History Journal\, and Vermont stories\, which includes curated podcasts and videos. We will explore these points of access to retrieve vital information that may help in your genealogy research. \nFor more information\, please contact the Windham County Genealogy Interest Group: windhamcountygig@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Brattleboro 250 Planning Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Come and connect with others who are interested in working on plans to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States in 2026. \nThis monthly meeting space on the 4th Wednesdays is dedicated for those who would like the opportunity to connect\, collaborate\, and work on projects that align with Vermont’s 250th Anniversary Commission’s mission to “…inspire all Vermonters to learn from the history\, legacy\, and context of the past to build strong Vermont communities for the future.” \nThe space is being hosted by Brooks Memorial Library\, Vermont Independent Media (The Commons) and Windham World Affairs Council\, with support from the Vermont Humanities Council. We are already working together on a collaboration entitled\, ‘Examining American Identity and Leadership in a Changing World’ – and have joined America 250\, a national initiative asking communities to plan for how to commemorate the 250th year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Its mission is to provide opportunities for all Americans to pause and reflect on our nation’s past & present\, honor the contributions of all Americans\, and look to the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond. \nNOTE: For the 09/24 session\, after an hour of meeting and organizing in the upstairs Community Room\, we encourage folks to join a special event in the Main Reading Room from 7 PM. Vermont historian J. Kevin Graffagnino will give a presentation of his NEW BOOK\, “Ira Allen: A Biography”\, as part of our local America 250 events in commemoration of America’s Semiquincentennial next year. All are welcome.

SUMMARY:Ira Allen: A Biography - Conversation with Author\, J. Kevin Graffagnino
DESCRIPTION:Vermont historian J. Kevin Graffagnino will give a special presentation as part of our local America 250 events in commemoration of America’s Semiquincentennial next year. \nBased on his new book “Ira Allen: A Biography\,” Graffagnino’s lively talk evaluates Allen’s checkered career and makes the case for including him in the picture of Vermont’s formative decades. According to the author’s press release\, “Land speculator\, revolutionary\, pamphleteer\, politician\, and empire-builder\, Ira Allen was a key figure on the late eighteenth-century Green Mountain frontier.” \nThe author will be bringing signed copies of his book for purchase. \nBased in Essex\, Vermont\, Graffagnino is the author or editor of more than a dozen books on Vermont history. Over the years\, he has served as the executive director of the state historical societies in Vermont and Kentucky\, and as director of the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. \nThis talk is brought to our community through a joint effort of the Brattleboro Literary Festival\, Brattleboro Historical Society\, Brooks Memorial Library\, and ‘Examining American Identity and Leadership in a Changing World’\, a collaborative initiative working to support America 250 events in this region. The event is free and open to the public\, with light refreshments to be served.
