Lawrence. \nFor Monday\, February 2nd\, the group will be reading and discussing The DAEMONS* by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. (warning: *”The DEVILS” a.k.a. several other names\, is 800+ pp. so get an early start). Participants meet from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Mezzanine Quiet Reading Room of the Brooks Memorial Library\, usually on the first Monday night of the month. If the meeting is cancelled due to inclement weather\, reading is pushed back to the following month. \n\nFor those with any visual challenges or limitations\,  there is an audiobook version of Sons and Lovers\, available gratis (and without commercials!) on YouTube\, read by actor Tony Foster (in a Yorkshire accent!).  It comes highly  highly recommended.

DESCRIPTION:Starting this past November\, Center for Solace (formerly Brattleboro Area Hospice) & Brooks Memorial Library\nbegan an 8-month collaboration on the first Wednesday of each month\, from 6-8 pm. \nCome join us for a wide range of conversations\non tender topics\, from Death Cafes\, to film & discussion nights\,\nspeaker panels\, a climate-grief dialogue\, and more. \nTogether we’ll explore some of the challenges of being alive in our time.\nFor instance\, how might we navigate illness\, caregiving\, or loss?\nOr beyond that\, face a much broader anguish for our fragile planet itself?\nBecause we know that at least one form of solace\nstems from staying connected. \nTo quote poet David Whyte\, “Solace is not meant to be\nan answer\, but an invitation\, through the door of pain and difficulty\,\nto the depth of suffering and simultaneous beauty in the world\nthat the strategic mind by itself cannot grasp or make sense of.”   \nJoin us for the January gathering in this series when we will discuss\nClimate & Ecological Grief: An Exploration \nAll are welcome as we create a space to slow down and share our feelings about the growing effects of climate change. DESCRIPTION:Join South Eastern Vermont’s Audubon Society for a monthly program featuring nature and the environment. \nJanuary’s Talk: Some Early Pioneers of Bird Field Guides – with David Spector \nSeveral New England authors contributed to the late 19th and early 20th century development of the bird field guide well before Roger Tory Peterson published his first guide. In this talk\, David will briefly introduce the books and lives of Henry D. Minot\, Florence Merriam\, Chester Reed\, and Ralph Hoffmann. \nDavid Spector is an ornithologist retired from the biology department of Central Connecticut State University. His research and professional publication originally focused on the function\, development\, and evolution of bird song\, especially the singing behaviors of wood-warblers. In recent years he has increasingly focused on birds in literature and the history of ornithology. He has given over a hundred public presentations in eight states and published many essays in newspapers and birdwatching magazines. He is coeditor of the Bird Finding Guide to Western Massachusetts and former board president of the Hitchcock Center for the Environment.
