Doctor Thomas Redden \nMain Reading Room 7:00 pm \nOptional meditation in Community Meeting Room\, 6:15 – 6:40 \nBeginners welcome at 6:00 for an introduction \nWhat if the Buddhist values of loving-kindness and compassion were at the heart of a political philosophy\, what we might call a ‘Politics of Compassion\,’ in 21st century USA?  Explore the Buddha’s world\, his politics\, and what an ‘Engaged Buddhism’ looks like in the US today through a series of three programs with Rev. Dr. Thomas Redden\, PhD\, Professor Emeritus of Political Science and History\, Southern Vermont College & Marlboro College\, and ordained Zen Buddhist priest\, Zen Peacemaker Order. \nThe series: \nThe Buddha’s World: October 19. The historic Buddha lived at a time of dramatic change technologically\, economically\, socially and politically. Dr. Redden will examine those changes and how the Buddha’s teachings challenged the traditional Brahmanism of his day and resonated with his many followers. \nThe Buddha as Political Actor: November 16. As the leader of religious community numbering in the thousands in Eastern India\, the Buddha needed to maintain good relations with the local kings and communities in order to thrive in a very political and often violent environment.  As a result\, he developed distinctive leadership styles toward his followers as well as the local rulers. Above all\, he was pragmatic\, non-dogmatic and flexible. \nEngaged Buddhism and American Politics Today: December 21.  With the global climate crisis and other daunting political issues clearly in their sight\, a variety of leading ‘Engaged Buddhists\,’ such as the Dalai Lama\, argue that our search for happiness through consumerism and naked self-interest is leading us down a path of self-destruction.  Engaged Buddhism works toward personal and social transformation with the aspiration of creating societies based on compassion and justice. \nThe lectures will be held in the Main Reading Room at 7 pm. Each presentation will be preceded by a short period of Zen meditation in the Community Meeting Room from 6:15-6:40 for those interested. Beginners are welcome to arrive at 6 for a brief introduction. \nThe program is free and open to the public. Her memoir\, Mother Noise\, tells the story of what life looks like twenty years after recovery from addiction in essays and graphic shorts. \nShe studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned an MFA from Lesley University in 2017. She lives in New Haven\, Connecticut\, with her son. \n

SUMMARY:William Mundell: Life and Poetry - Brattleboro Literary Festival
DESCRIPTION:William Mundell (1912-1997)  is one of Vermont’s finest native-born poets.  He lived his entire life in South Newfane\, unusually combining his career as a poet with work as a carpenter\, stone mason\, and State highway foreman.  He served on the town selectboard\, as an auditor\, and justice of the peace\, and was also editor of Poet Lore magazine.  In 1989\, he was named Vermont Poet Laureate\, by the Poetry Society of Vermont; the previous recipient of the award had been Robert Frost. \n\n\n\n\nThis event features a roundtable discussion on Mundell’s life and career\, with reminiscences by nephews Merrill Mundell\, jr and Malcolm Mundell\, and great-nephew Eric Mundell. \nAlso joining the panel will be Andy Burrows of Guilford\, who guided the publication of Mundell’s first volume of poetry by the Stephen Greene Press.  There were three volumes all together. \nAn exhibit will highlight the poet’s other achievements as a photographer — his work was featured in Life magazine. \n  \nThe evening will conclude with a reading/lecture by Don McLean of Guilford\, a Vermont based independent scholar and composer. As part of the Brattleboro Words Project McLean contributed to the research of three 19th century Guilford/Brattleboro literary personalities\, which included Lucy Terry Prince\, 18th century African American poet of Guilford; Royall and Mary Tyler\, who lived in both Guilford and Brattleboro in the early 19th century; and the  fiction author Mary E. Wilkins Freeman\, who lived in Brattleboro later in that century. \nHis lecture on the 20th century Vermont poet\, William Mundell\, scheduled for 2020\, was interrupted during the Covid crisis. \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:First Wednesdays: The Electric Period of Miles Davis
DESCRIPTION:With Reuben Jackson\nThe ever-changing music that Miles Davis recorded from 1969 to 1975 angered and bewildered many critics and fans\, who accused the trumpeter of “selling out.” Jazz archivist and poet Reuben Jackson shares how recordings from Davis’ “Electric Period”—including 1974’s Get Up With It—prove otherwise. \n \nReuben Jackson is the Archivist with the University of The District of Columbia’s Felix E. Grant Jazz Archives. For 20 years he was archivist and curator with the Smithsonian Institution’s Duke Ellington Collection. He was also host of Vermont Public Radio’s Friday Night Jazz from 2012 until 2018. His music reviews have appeared in The Washington Post\, Jazziz\, Jazz Times\, and on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. He is also the author of two books of poetry- 1990’s fingering the keys (Gut Punch Press)-and 2019’s Scattered Clouds (Alan Squire Publishing). \nThe First Wednesdays series includes in-person events in Fall and Spring with virtual events in the Winter. Director of Programs Ryan Newswanger said of the new format: “Many of our attendees in recent years have told us they value viewing First Wednesdays talks from the comfort of their homes\, especially during the winter months.” Click for the full First Wednesdays schedule for 2022-23 \nThe Brattleboro series is funded by the Friends of Brooks Memorial Library. \n \nThe program is free of charge and open to the public.
