DESCRIPTION:With Reuben Jackson\nThe ever-changing music that Miles Davis recorded from 1969 to 1975 angered and bewildered many critics and fans\, who accused the trumpeter of “selling out.” Jazz archivist and poet Reuben Jackson shares how recordings from Davis’ “Electric Period”—including 1974’s Get Up With It—prove otherwise. \n \nReuben Jackson is the Archivist with the University of The District of Columbia’s Felix E. Grant Jazz Archives. For 20 years he was archivist and curator with the Smithsonian Institution’s Duke Ellington Collection. He was also host of Vermont Public Radio’s Friday Night Jazz from 2012 until 2018. His music reviews have appeared in The Washington Post\, Jazziz\, Jazz Times\, and on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. He is also the author of two books of poetry- 1990’s fingering the keys (Gut Punch Press)-and 2019’s Scattered Clouds (Alan Squire Publishing). \nThe First Wednesdays series includes in-person events in Fall and Spring with virtual events in the Winter. DESCRIPTION:Author Shin Freedman will lead a three-part workshop to explore the craft of writing memoir \n10:00-12:00 on three Saturdays: October 1st\, October 22nd and November 5th at Brooks Memorial Library \n“Great memoirs deal with the subject of identity and lifetime quests by weaving cohesive stories from jumbled\, imperfect memories. What propels people to write a memoir\, and what motivates us to read them? Memoir writing is powerful\, rewarding\, and therapeutic for both the writer and readers’” says Freedman. Elements of the program include: \n\nWhat makes a memoir a memoir\nWriting a meaningful personal essay as a memoir\nWriting a memoir alone and with others\nSharing one’s writing with the participants and making plans to publish their work\n\nShin Freedman published her memoir A Doll for a Day: Growing up in Post-War Korea in 2019 and an anthology\, Accidental American in 2020. She is the recipient of many writing/literary awards including the First Prize winner from Massachusetts for the 30th Anniversary of H-Mart Writing Contest in 2013 and the Vermont Write Action Annual Writing Contest in 2017 and was a U.S. Fulbright Scholar to China in 2016-2017. \nThe program is free of charge and open to the public. This is an opportunity for community members to have a personal conversation with Brad Long of Efficiency Vermont to discuss their home\, apartment or business energy use and what can be done to reduce it while becoming more comfortable. \nPresentation on Weatherizing your windows\n7:00-8:00 on Sept. 28th in the Community Meeting Room\nLearn what you can do to weatherize your windows or how to make an informed decision about whether or not to replace or repair them.  Windows can account for up to 30% of a home’s air leakage\, so a lot of people look to replace them during a home renovation or weatherization project.  Did you know that the return on investment for a window replacement is often times greater in length than the lifespan of the window?  Come learn how you can reduce air leakage without breaking the bank and why weatherizing your windows is a smart choice most of the time.
