DESCRIPTION:The right to protest is one of the people’s most fundamental freedoms\, but what about speech that veers toward lawlessness or social disorder? During most of the 20th century\, governments put speakers in jail for creating a “clear and present danger.” Under that rule\, Eugene Debs went to prison for denouncing the first World War and Charlotte Whitney went to jail for belonging to the Communist Party.  As far as the government was concerned\, their sentences were too dangerous to be heard in public. \nIn 1969\, the Supreme Court changed the rule. Only words that caused “immanent lawless action” could be suppressed. In the Brandenburg decision\, the ACLU successfully defended a Klansman\, giving all of us greater freedom from government prosecution. The Black and Jewish advocates who came to the aid of Clarence Brandenburg were able to see the principles of free speech beyond his racist and anti-Semitic rhetoric. \nThe question for us post-Brandenburg  is\, How can we love the principle even when we don’t like the speech? \nCo-sponsored by Windham World Affairs\, Vermont Humanities\, The Commons\, Vermont Independent Media: Voices Live\, and Brattleboro Community Television.

DESCRIPTION:In Robin’s Song\, Robin\, dealing with loss and anxiety\, leaves Brooklyn to come to live in a small Vermont town with her cousin Darcey.  Through nature\, music and poetry\, the tweens bond\, while Robin learns skills to deal with her emotions. \nAuthor Lynn Levine will speak about why she wrote Robin’s Song and about her personal story of dealing with mental health challenges. \nCarol Compton\, Education Programs Director for Brattleboro Music Center\, will discuss how music both heals and empowers and their approach to helping students deal with their emotional self. \nAnn Gengarelly\, a poet\, who runs the Poetry Studio\, will talk about the ways poetry supports the emotional health of young people and empowers them. \nMichael Clough\, Executive Director of Museum of Natural History will talk about their approach to the topic of how nature heals and empowers\, specifically focusing on their approach to working with preteens.  He will bring a live animal. \nLynn Levine has worked with children and adults in classrooms and libraries and has taken thousands of people into the forest to share her love of nature. She finds that connecting people to the forest though teaching about the outdoors is a powerful way to help others feel the same.
