SUMMARY:Mud Season Speaker Series - Salamander Tea Party with BEEC
DESCRIPTION:Mud Season Speaker Series \nThe Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center and the Brooks Memorial Library invite you to a series of programs based upon the Vermont Reads 2025-26 selection\, The Light Pirate\, with the themes of climate resilience through community and the unstoppable power of the natural world. \nThe Light Pirate \nNamed after a catastrophic storm\, Wanda is born into a world that’s rapidly changing. Rising sea levels and devastating weather patterns transform her coastal Florida town. As she moves from childhood to adulthood\, Wanda adapts to this remade landscape\, finding adventure\, love\, and purpose in a place largely abandoned by civilization. \nTold in four parts—power\, water\, light\, and time—The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks-Dalton is a meditation on the beauty and violence of an untamable wilderness. It considers the dissolution of the human-made world\, and helps us see how human connection\, adaptability\, and a little bit of magic might guide us to a new future. \nGet a copy at the library! \n  \nMonday\, February 9\, 2026 from 6:30-8 \nPumpkin and Pye: How Beavers Keep Us Cool \nPumpkin was born in a stone culvert under Upper Dummerston Road and orphaned when his mother was hit by a car. Pye was attacked and badly injured by a dog as a yearling. BEEC naturalist Patti Smith will tell how these young beavers came together and into her care. Photos and videos will illustrate the adventures that ensued. \nPatti maintains that beavers are not just lovable\, they are important. She will also talk about their crucial role in holding water on a warming planet and mitigating floods. Find out how communities are solving beaver conflicts in ways that allow beavers to keep us cool. \n  \nMonday\, March 9\, 2026 from 6:30-8 \nThirty-Eight: The Hurricane That Transformed New England \nA hurricane will never surprise us again. But that’s what happened to the people of New England on September 21\, 1938. Without any warning\, the most destructive weather event ever to hit the Northeast pummeled the coast and blasted its way to Vermont and New Hampshire with torrential rain\, flooding\, and sustained winds over 100 miles per hour. \nStephen Long tells the story of New England’s Katrina\, focusing on the devastation to the region’s forests and the daunting challenge facing New Englanders still in the throes of the Great Depression. His presentation is richly illustrated with archival photos of storm damage and the unprecedented recovery operation\, making the storm and its aftermath come alive. A journalist and co-founder of Northern Woodlands magazine\, Stephen Long is the author of Thirty-Eight: The Hurricane that Transformed New England. \n  \n Monday\, March 30 at 7 pm \nSalamander Crossing Brigades: help save salamanders \nAs our planet heats up amphibians are vulnerable. A group of important amphibians in our region depend upon temporary ponds—vernal pools—for egg-laying. These pools can dry much too fast in drought years. They are also vulnerable when they must cross roads to reach their breeding habitat. You can help! Join a Salamander Crossing Brigade. Getting adult amphibians safely across roads is a big way we can make their populations resilient. \nThe Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center has been organizing crossing brigades at known crossing sites for decades. Come to the library to learn more about the amazing amphibians that head for vernal pools in the spring and what you can do to help them. \n  \nSaturday\, April 4\, 10:30-12pm \nSalamander Tea Party with BEEC \nEnjoy salamander story books read by our salamander mascot\, snack on salamander cookies\, and learn all about salamander season in Vermont! \nNaturalists will be on hand to answer questions about how and where you can take a peek at amphibian eggs or help out with amphibian conservation and community science projects including BEEC’s Salamander Crossing Brigade. \n  \nMonday\, April 13  from 6:30-8 \nVermont Reads Book Discussion: The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks-Dalton \nJoin us for a thoughtful\, guided conversation centered on The Light Pirate\, a novel that follows one girl’s life as climate change reshapes Florida’s coast—and the meaning of home\, resilience\, and community. Rachael Cohen\, environmental writer and editor\, will facilitate this 90-minute discussion\, creating space to reflect together on the book’s themes\, characters\, and emotional impact. \nParticipants will explore themes such as climate adaptation and how people respond—individually and collectively—to environmental change. All readers are welcome\, whether the book moved you deeply or left you with lingering questions. Come prepared to listen\, reflect\, and engage in a meaningful exchange inspired by this powerful and timely novel. \n

SUMMARY:Talking About Tech: Managing Passwords
DESCRIPTION:xkcd comic #936 “Password Strength” by Randall Munroe. Used in compliance with Creative Commons CC BY-NC 2.5. \nBring your tech questions and answers to a new monthly series for technology help. Fourth Saturdays from 10:30 to noon at Brooks Memorial Library. \nThis month’s spotlight topic: managing passwords\nDo you struggle to remember your passwords? To come up with a new one for every new account and app? Feel like you don’t even know what accounts you have? \nThis month’s spotlight is on password management. With so many everyday tasks moving online\, there are more and more accounts we have to create and access…each one demanding a password. Keeping them straight\, being able to find one when you need it\, can be a daily struggle. \nLuckily\, there are a lot of options that can help keep the password mess manageable. From low-tech to cloud-based\, there’s a wide variety of approaches. Maybe an old-fashioned rolodex is the answer you’ve been looking for. Or possibly you need an online password vault\, that syncs to your every device\, with the ability to share passwords with others. Come to learn about some of these options\, and share your experience. \nDo you have a favorite password app to share? \nWhat is Talking About Tech?\nOur vision is an interactive gathering a bit like a book club crossed with a crafting group\, with a touch of a drop-in bike repair clinic.  Each session will begin with a 30-minute guided discussion of a tech topic of interest.  One month we might talk about managing passwords\, or organizing email and files; how the internet works\, or vibe coding with AI. \nThen we’ll have a about an hour for mutual tech support\, on the focus topic or other areas of need and interest. Maybe you have the answer someone else is looking for! The library’s Electronic Services Specialist\, Matt\, will be there to provide expert help. Bring your phone\, tablet\, or laptop. \nDo you have a request for a future spotlight topic?\nSuggestions are welcome!  We want Talking About Tech to be shaped through participation\, so bring ideas for a future topic to any session.  You can also contact the library with your request.  Maybe you’d be the perfect person to lead discussion on some spotlight topic!

SUMMARY:Brattleboro 250 Planning Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Come and connect with others who are interested in working on plans to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States in 2026. \nThis monthly meeting space on the 4th Wednesdays is dedicated for those who would like the opportunity to connect\, collaborate\, and work on projects that align with Vermont’s 250th Anniversary Commission’s mission to “…inspire all Vermonters to learn from the history\, legacy\, and context of the past to build strong Vermont communities for the future.” \nThe space is being hosted by Brooks Memorial Library\, Vermont Independent Media (The Commons) and Windham World Affairs Council\, with support from the Vermont Humanities Council. We are already working together on a collaboration entitled\, ‘Examining American Identity and Leadership in a Changing World – and have joined America 250\, a national initiative asking communities to plan for how to commemorate the 250th year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Its mission is to provide opportunities for all Americans to pause and reflect on our nation’s past & present\, honor the contributions of all Americans\, and look to the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond.

SUMMARY:Food\, Ecosystems and Community: Lessons from Nature
DESCRIPTION:Join Edible Brattleboro for a winter workshop series exploring the living systems at the heart of a community food forest. Together\, we’ll learn how to create regenerative\, resilient landscapes-where soil\, plants\, and people work together in mutually supportive relationships. \nThe series features nationally recognized speakers Didi Pershouse and Dave Jacke. Didi is an author\, educator\, and policy strategist\, whose work focuses on living soils\, carbon cycles\, and the role of soil health in resilient ecosystems and communities. Dave Jacke is co-author of Edible Food Forest Gardens and a leading voice in permaculture and ecological design. Jacke will present two talks exploring forest gardening as a model for home and community landscapes\, and how ecosystem principles-such as diversity\, cooperation\, and interdependence-can inform resilient social structures. Together\, these speakers bring deep ecological insight and practical wisdom rooted in nature based systems. \nWhether you’re cultivating a backyard\, tending a shared green space\, or simply interested in how ecosystems sustain life\, this series offers insight\, inspiration\, and actionable ideas for nurturing landscapes that grow\, adapt\, and nourish for generations. \nSpeaker Schedule: \n– Tuesday\, January 13 | 7:00 PM\nDidi Pershouse — Author • Educator • Policy Strategist\nSoil as a Living System: How Healthy Soil Supports Ecosystems and Communities \nAn exploration of soil biology and the critical role living soils play in climate resilience\, food systems\, and community health. \n-Tuesday\, February 10 | 7:00 PM\nDave Jacke — Co-author of Edible Forest Gardens\nGardening Like a Forest: Ecosystem Mimicry for Homes and Communities \nHealthy forests maintain\, fertilize\, and renew themselves\, naturally.  Wouldn’t you like to grow an abundant food-producing ecosystem like this in your back yard or neighborhood? You can! Edible forest gardens mimic the structure and function of natural forests while growing food\, fuel\, fiber\, fodder\, fertilizers\, pharmaceuticals\, and fun.
