SUMMARY:Talking About Tech: Managing Passwords
DESCRIPTION:xkcd comic #936 “Password Strength” by Randall Munroe. Used in compliance with Creative Commons CC BY-NC 2.5. \nBring your tech questions and answers to a new monthly series for technology help. Fourth Saturdays from 10:30 to noon at Brooks Memorial Library. \nThis month’s spotlight topic: managing passwords\nDo you struggle to remember your passwords? To come up with a new one for every new account and app? Feel like you don’t even know what accounts you have? \nThis month’s spotlight is on password management. With so many everyday tasks moving online\, there are more and more accounts we have to create and access…each one demanding a password. Keeping them straight\, being able to find one when you need it\, can be a daily struggle. \nLuckily\, there are a lot of options that can help keep the password mess manageable. From low-tech to cloud-based\, there’s a wide variety of approaches. Maybe an old-fashioned rolodex is the answer you’ve been looking for. Or possibly you need an online password vault\, that syncs to your every device\, with the ability to share passwords with others. Come to learn about some of these options\, and share your experience. \nDo you have a favorite password app to share? \nWhat is Talking About Tech?\nOur vision is an interactive gathering a bit like a book club crossed with a crafting group\, with a touch of a drop-in bike repair clinic.  Each session will begin with a 30-minute guided discussion of a tech topic of interest.  One month we might talk about managing passwords\, or organizing email and files; how the internet works\, or vibe coding with AI. \nThen we’ll have a about an hour for mutual tech support\, on the focus topic or other areas of need and interest. Maybe you have the answer someone else is looking for! The library’s Electronic Services Specialist\, Matt\, will be there to provide expert help. Bring your phone\, tablet\, or laptop. \nDo you have a request for a future spotlight topic?\nSuggestions are welcome!  We want Talking About Tech to be shaped through participation\, so bring ideas for a future topic to any session.  You can also contact the library with your request.  Maybe you’d be the perfect person to lead discussion on some spotlight topic!

SUMMARY:Brattleboro 250 Planning Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Come and connect with others who are interested in working on plans to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States in 2026. \nThis monthly meeting space on the 4th Wednesdays is dedicated for those who would like the opportunity to connect\, collaborate\, and work on projects that align with Vermont’s 250th Anniversary Commission’s mission to “…inspire all Vermonters to learn from the history\, legacy\, and context of the past to build strong Vermont communities for the future.” \nThe space is being hosted by Brooks Memorial Library\, Vermont Independent Media (The Commons) and Windham World Affairs Council\, with support from the Vermont Humanities Council. We are already working together on a collaboration entitled\, ‘Examining American Identity and Leadership in a Changing World – and have joined America 250\, a national initiative asking communities to plan for how to commemorate the 250th year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Its mission is to provide opportunities for all Americans to pause and reflect on our nation’s past & present\, honor the contributions of all Americans\, and look to the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond.

SUMMARY:Food\, Ecosystems and Community: Lessons from Nature
DESCRIPTION:Join Edible Brattleboro for a winter workshop series exploring the living systems at the heart of a community food forest. Together\, we’ll learn how to create regenerative\, resilient landscapes-where soil\, plants\, and people work together in mutually supportive relationships. \nThe series features nationally recognized speakers Didi Pershouse and Dave Jacke. Didi is an author\, educator\, and policy strategist\, whose work focuses on living soils\, carbon cycles\, and the role of soil health in resilient ecosystems and communities. Dave Jacke is co-author of Edible Food Forest Gardens and a leading voice in permaculture and ecological design. Jacke will present two talks exploring forest gardening as a model for home and community landscapes\, and how ecosystem principles-such as diversity\, cooperation\, and interdependence-can inform resilient social structures. Together\, these speakers bring deep ecological insight and practical wisdom rooted in nature based systems. \nWhether you’re cultivating a backyard\, tending a shared green space\, or simply interested in how ecosystems sustain life\, this series offers insight\, inspiration\, and actionable ideas for nurturing landscapes that grow\, adapt\, and nourish for generations. \nSpeaker Schedule: \n– Tuesday\, January 13 | 7:00 PM\nDidi Pershouse — Author • Educator • Policy Strategist\nSoil as a Living System: How Healthy Soil Supports Ecosystems and Communities \nAn exploration of soil biology and the critical role living soils play in climate resilience\, food systems\, and community health. \n-Tuesday\, February 10 | 7:00 PM\nDave Jacke — Co-author of Edible Forest Gardens\nGardening Like a Forest: Ecosystem Mimicry for Homes and Communities \nHealthy forests maintain\, fertilize\, and renew themselves\, naturally.  Wouldn’t you like to grow an abundant food-producing ecosystem like this in your back yard or neighborhood? You can! Edible forest gardens mimic the structure and function of natural forests while growing food\, fuel\, fiber\, fodder\, fertilizers\, pharmaceuticals\, and fun. We can meet our own needs and regenerate healthy landscapes\, communities\, and ecosystems at the same time.  We will dive into the vision of forest gardening\, a little history\, some science\, a few living examples\, and a sampling of some useful perennial edibles you can use in your own gardens. \n-Tuesday\, March 10 | 7:00 PM\nDave Jacke\nEcosystem Social Structures \nFunctional social interactions between species lie at the core of healthy ecosystems.  Understanding species and community niches\, interspecies relationships\, food webs\, guilds\, polycultures\, and the principles that undergird these structures greatly improves our ability to design and manage healthy forest gardens—and healthy human societies! \n-Tuesday\, March 24th | 7:00 PM \nRicky Baruch and Deb Habib — Founders of Seeds of Solidarity in Orange MA\, with over three decades of experience gardening\, farming and teaching widely.\nGrow Food Everywhere! \nCelebrate spring with this engaging presentation and inspiration for abundant gardens to come. Appropriate for both beginning and experienced gardeners\, you will gain ideas for building rich\, living soil with local resources and regenerative no-till methods. SUMMARY:Atowi Project\, VT Conservation Plan Public Listening Session
DESCRIPTION:One of a statewide series of public listening sessions to raise awareness of and seek comment upon the development of the new VT Conservation Plan in fulfillment of 2023’s Act 59. Known as the Community Resilience and Biodiversity Protection Act\, it establishes a statewide framework for land conservation that advances biodiversity protection and supports resilient communities. The Act additionally establishes the goals of conserving 30% of Vermont by 2030 and 50% by 2050. The State of Vermont needs to hear from us about what priorities and actions we think should move to the top of the implementation list. \nLearn more here: https://vermontconservationplan.com/

SUMMARY:Celebrating the Poetry of Robert Frost
DESCRIPTION:March 26 is the birthday of New England’s greatest poet\, and for that matter one of America’s greatest poets. As a long-time admirer of Robert Frost\, Raymond Clark will be performing twenty of Frost’s poems in the early twentieth-century dialect of coastal New Hampshire\, where he grew up and Frost once resided. Beginning with Frost’s favorite introduction to his collection of over 500 poems\, Clark will “Go out to clean the pasture spring.” and travel through the seasons until a crow shakes down on him\, “a dust of snow.” There will be time between each poem for interaction\, but the focus will be on the poems\, not the poet.

While immersing readers in the triumphs and tribulations of being a wildlife biologist\, Sophie explores the threats that imperiled these birds\, and reveals that what harmed them threatens us\, too. She will discuss what led to the endangerment of these three captivating species\, recount the efforts of biologists to recover their populations\, and read a few excerpts from her book that describe what it was like to work with these magnificent birds. \nBiography: Sophie A. H. Osborn is an award-winning environmental writer and wildlife biologist whose work has included the study and conservation of more than a dozen bird species in the Americas. She contributed to reintroduction efforts for several endangered birds and served as the field manager for the California Condor Recovery Program in Arizona for four years. Her first book\, Condors in Canyon Country\, won the 2007 National Outdoor Book Award for Nature and the Environment. Reviewers for the American Birding Association (ABA) chose her second book\, Feather Trails\, as their favorite bird book of 2024. Sophie has written articles for BirdWatching\, Wyoming Wildlife\, and Sojourns magazines. Her writings are also available on her website and her “Words for Birds” Substack blog.

SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet in the Quiet Reading Room from 7:00pm – 8:30pm to discuss The Only Harmless Great Thing by Brooke Bolander! \nIn the early years of the 20th century\, a group of female factory workers in Newark\, New Jersey slowly died of radiation poisoning. Around the same time\, an Indian elephant was deliberately put to death by electricity in Coney Island. These are the facts. Now these two tragedies are intertwined in a dark alternate history of rage\, radioactivity\, and injustice crying out to be righted. Prepare yourself for a wrenching journey that crosses eras\, chronicling histories of cruelty both grand and petty in search of meaning and justice. \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Monday of every month and is open to curious minds\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.
