SUMMARY:"PART FOR THE HOLE" - book launch with author Peter Gould
DESCRIPTION:Postponed – due to a publishing matter.  As soon as we have the rescheduled date\, it will be posted. Stay tuned!  \nAt a time of increasing politicization of the idea of arts support\, this new novel\, PART FOR THE HOLE\, puts the reader into the mind and heart of a mild-mannered High School teacher who decides to rescue the National Endowment for the Arts all by himself—with the help of his sometime-lover and a bunch of his AP English students. They realize it’s time to take a stand\, to not allow every working artist to disappear into a corporate world that could ask for their soul in return for their success. But be advised: no artists\, teachers\, students\, or administrators were harmed in the writing or reading of this story: it’s all theater\, all metaphor! \n“Sentence by nimble sentence\, Gould gallivants through his story\, and I follow \nhis jazzy solo phrases\, hoping that this book never ends.” \nPeter Coyote\, old hipster\, author\, actor\, Zen Buddhist priest. \nPART FOR THE HOLE will be published by Whetstone Books in April\, 2026. Brooks Memorial Library is honored to host this book launch event. All are welcome! \n——— \nPeter Gould founded (in 1998) and still directs the “Get Thee to the Funnery” youth Shakespeare camp in the Northeast Kingdom. For his work with theater and creative writing students around Vermont\, he earned the Arts Council’s 2016 Ellen McCulloch-Lovell Arts Educator of the Year Award.

SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet in the Quiet Reading Room from 7:00pm – 8:30pm to discuss A Song for a New Day by Sarah Pinsker! \nIn the Before\, when the government didn’t prohibit large public gatherings\, Luce Cannon was on top of the world. One of her songs had just taken off and she was on her way to becoming a star. Now\, in the After\, terror attacks and deadly viruses have led the government to ban concerts\, and Luce’s connection to the world—her music\, her purpose—is closed off forever. She does what she has to do: she performs in illegal concerts to a small but passionate community\, always evading the law. \nRosemary Laws barely remembers the Before times. She spends her days in Hoodspace\, helping customers order all of their goods online for drone delivery—no physical contact with humans needed. By lucky chance\, she finds a new job and a new calling: discover amazing musicians and bring their concerts to everyone via virtual reality. The only catch is that she’ll have to do something she’s never done before and go out in public. Find the illegal concerts and bring musicians into the limelight they deserve. But when she sees how the world could actually be\, that won’t be enough. \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Monday of every month and is open to curious minds\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.

Fourth Saturdays from 10:30 to noon at Brooks Memorial Library. \nThis month’s spotlight topic: managing passwords\nDo you struggle to remember your passwords? To come up with a new one for every new account and app? Feel like you don’t even know what accounts you have? \nThis month’s spotlight is on password management. With so many everyday tasks moving online\, there are more and more accounts we have to create and access…each one demanding a password. Keeping them straight\, being able to find one when you need it\, can be a daily struggle. \nLuckily\, there are a lot of options that can help keep the password mess manageable. From low-tech to cloud-based\, there’s a wide variety of approaches. Maybe an old-fashioned rolodex is the answer you’ve been looking for. Or possibly you need an online password vault\, that syncs to your every device\, with the ability to share passwords with others. Come to learn about some of these options\, and share your experience. \nDo you have a favorite password app to share? \nWhat is Talking About Tech?\nOur vision is an interactive gathering a bit like a book club crossed with a crafting group\, with a touch of a drop-in bike repair clinic.  Each session will begin with a 30-minute guided discussion of a tech topic of interest.  One month we might talk about managing passwords\, or organizing email and files; how the internet works\, or vibe coding with AI. \nThen we’ll have a about an hour for mutual tech support\, on the focus topic or other areas of need and interest. Maybe you have the answer someone else is looking for! The library’s Electronic Services Specialist\, Matt\, will be there to provide expert help. Bring your phone\, tablet\, or laptop. \nDo you have a request for a future spotlight topic?\nSuggestions are welcome!  We want Talking About Tech to be shaped through participation\, so bring ideas for a future topic to any session.  You can also contact the library with your request.  Maybe you’d be the perfect person to lead discussion on some spotlight topic!

SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet in the Quiet Reading Room from 7:00pm – 8:30pm to discuss The Only Harmless Great Thing by Brooke Bolander! \nIn the early years of the 20th century\, a group of female factory workers in Newark\, New Jersey slowly died of radiation poisoning. Around the same time\, an Indian elephant was deliberately put to death by electricity in Coney Island. These are the facts. Now these two tragedies are intertwined in a dark alternate history of rage\, radioactivity\, and injustice crying out to be righted. Prepare yourself for a wrenching journey that crosses eras\, chronicling histories of cruelty both grand and petty in search of meaning and justice. \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Monday of every month and is open to curious minds\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.

SUMMARY:Talking About Tech
DESCRIPTION:Illustration AI-generated with Google Gemini.  Can you spot the signs? \nBring your tech questions and answers to a new monthly series for technology help. Fourth Saturdays from 10:30 to noon at Brooks Memorial Library. \nThis month’s spotlight topic: Spotting online scams\nIs that email or text really from whom it claims?  Did an Amazon order for $500 just get charged to me?  Do I believe the message I just got saying there’s a problem with my bank or credit card account?  Should I call Microsoft immediately because of a problem with my computer?  Should I click that link? \nOur guided discussion this month will be online scams and how to spot them.  This is a big topic and we’ll only scratch the surface in the spotlight time\, but we’ll hit the highlights (lowlights?).  Of course\, if the group wants\, we can continue talking about scams after the opening half-hour. \nSpoiler: the answer to those questions is often NO! \nWhat is Talking About Tech?\nOur vision is an interactive gathering a bit like a book club crossed with a crafting group\, with a touch of a drop-in bike repair clinic.  Each session will begin with a 30-minute guided discussion of a tech topic of interest.  One month we might talk about managing passwords\, or organizing email and files; how the internet works\, what those computer specs mean\, or vibe coding with AI. \nThen we’ll have a about an hour for mutual tech support\, on the focus topic or other areas of need and interest. Maybe you have the answer someone else is looking for! The library’s Electronic Services Specialist\, Matt Wojcik\, will be there to provide expert help.

DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet in the Quiet Reading Room from 7:00pm – 8:30pm to discuss The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury! \nIn The Martian Chronicles\, Ray Bradbury imagines a place of hope\, dreams\, and metaphor— of crystal pillars and fossil seas—where a fine dust settles on the great empty cities of a vanished\, devastated civilization. Earthmen conquer Mars and then are conquered by it\, lulled by dangerous lies of comfort and familiarity\, and enchanted by the lingering glamour of an ancient\, mysterious native race. In this classic work of fiction\, Bradbury exposes our ambitions\, weaknesses\, and ignorance in a strange and breathtaking world where man does not belong. \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Monday of every month and is open to curious minds\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.

SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet in the Quiet Reading Room from 7:00pm – 8:30pm to discuss Metallic Realms by Lincoln Michel! \nPerennially single\, socially awkward\, and drowning in debt\, Michael Lincoln finds his life has turned out nothing like the intergalactic lives of the pulp heroes of his youth. But these are pedestrian concerns—he has a higher calling\, and that is to preserve for all posterity the greatest series in the history of the written word: The Star Rot Chronicles. Written collectively by Michael’s best (and perhaps only) friend Taras K. Castle and his misfit science fiction writing group\, the Orb 4\, the stories follow Captain Baldwin and his fearless crew on their mind-bending adventures across the Metallic Realms\, from solar whales swallowing suns at the edge of spacetime to extraterrestrial romances and interstellar wars. These masterpieces have gone tragically unpublished—until now. But the most urgent story Michael must tell takes place in the more intimate (if no less dramatic) confines of literary Brooklyn. Behind the greatest universe ever created\, there are the all-too-mortal people who wrote it. As Michael chronicles the personal melodramas of the Orb 4 as well as the fun house reflections in their fiction\, the line between real and unreal becomes dangerously thin\, and the true reasons for the group’s fallout begin to emerge. As he labors away in hiding\, Michael has just one mission: to bring the Metallic Realms to the world. No matter the cost. \nPlease note that this SFRG will be meeting on the fourth Monday of the month! The Sci-Fi Reading Group typically meets the third Monday of every month and is open to curious minds of all ages\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.
