SUMMARY:Interaction's Prison Quilt Project
DESCRIPTION:Fractured\, Not Broken\, is a collaborative quilt project connecting people inside and outside prison walls. \nWe invite you to join in the hand-stitching of Interaction’s Prison Quilt in the Main Reading Room from 5-7 PM on Monday\, August 10th — poignantly on International Prisoners’ Justice Day. \nThis project had an initial goal to provide a space for incarcerated Vermonters to reflect on and share their experience of incarceration\, while also tapping into the healing and transformational power of telling their stories through art. As the project developed\, it became important to expand the project to include the hands of the community that will welcome home these incarcerated individuals. \nThe incarcerated quilters are JA\, DC\, DF\, QG\, FN\, JO\, and TR. The completed quilt will hang in the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center in September – October 2026.  All are welcome to visit the library to add your own stitch before it is celebrated at the museum. For more information\, visit interactionvt.org/quilt/. \nThe quilt is presented by Interaction with funding from the Vermont Prison Research Innovation Network (PRIN) and the Vermont Arts Council.

SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Film Series: 2001 - A SPACE ODYSSEY
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Film Series is your chance to see great and classic Sci-Fi films on the big screen! Join us at the Latchis Theater to watch this month’s film\, 2001: A Space Odyssey! \nStanley Kubrick’s masterpiece is a story of evolution. Sometime in the distant past\, someone or something nudged evolution by placing a monolith on Earth (presumably elsewhere throughout the universe as well). Evolution then enabled humankind to reach the moon’s surface\, where yet another monolith is found\, one that signals the monolith placers that humankind has evolved that far. Now mankind\, assisted by the supercomputer HAL 9000\, must dare to encounter the monolith placers. If successful\, the next step in evolution–whatever it is–will be achieved. \nAttendees are invited to stay afterward for a discussion about the film. Admission by donation. \nPresented by Brooks Memorial Library and the Latchis Theater. Sponsored by the Friends of Brooks Memorial Library. \n

SUMMARY:Talking About Tech: What is WiFi?
DESCRIPTION:Illustration AI-generated with Google Gemini.  Can you spot the signs? \nBring your tech questions and answers to a new monthly series for technology help. Fourth Saturdays from 10:30 to noon at Brooks Memorial Library. \nThis month’s spotlight topic: how do our devices connect\, actually?\nUsing the phone used to be simple: if it was plugged into the phone jack in the wall\, you could make and receive phone calls.  (Even if the power went out!)  These days\, it all seems a lot more complicated\, especially adding home and mobile internet into the mix. \nHow does my phone get my phone calls?  What’s Wi-Fi?  Is it the same as cellular?  What’s Wi-Fi Calling?  What about the “data” part of my cell plan?  What’s Bluetooth?  What does Airplane Mode do? \nDo I have a router?  A modem? If my phone plugs into that box my internet service provider sent me\, is it still a landline? \nHow can I get signal in the dead zone at my place? \nDo I need to care about any of this?!? \nJoin us as we cut through the jargon and get to the bottom of it all. \nWhat is Talking About Tech?\nIt’s what you want to make it!  The loose structure is an interactive gathering a bit like a book club crossed with a crafting group\, with a touch of a drop-in bike repair clinic.  Each session will begin with a 30-minute guided discussion around a tech topic of interest. Then we’ll go where the conversation takes us. Maybe we’ll flow to related topics\, or perhaps someone will have a question that takes us in an entirely different direction.  We’ll try to leave time for peer support\, breaking into small groups or one-on-one sessions where we can help each other through the daily frustrations of our increasingly digital lives.  Bring your phone\, tablet\, or laptop\, and something that’s been stumping you! \n

SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet in the Quiet Reading Room from 7:00pm – 8:30pm to discuss Sunward by William Alexander! \nCaptain Tova Lir chose a life as a courier rather than get involved in her family’s illustrious business in politics. Set in humanity’s far future\, hiring a planetary courier is essential for delivering private messages across the stars. Encouraged by friends\, Tova begins mentoring baby bots\, juvenile AI who are developmentally in their teens\, and trains them how to interact within society essentially becoming their foster mom. Her latest charge\, Agatha Panza von Sparkles\, named herself on their first run from Luna to Phoebe station. But on their return\, they encounter a derelict spaceship and a lurking assassin\, igniting a thrilling chase across the solar system. Tova and Agatha’s daring actions leave Agatha’s mind vulnerable\, relying on Tova’s former AI pupils for help. As Tova starts gathering her scattered family around her\, she is chased through the solar system by forces who want her captured and her family erased \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Monday of every month and is open to curious minds\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.

SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Film Series: STALKER
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Film Series is your chance to see great and classic Sci-Fi films on the big screen! Join us at the Latchis Theater to watch this month’s film\, Stalker! \nAndrei Tarkovsky’s final Soviet feature is a metaphysical journey through an enigmatic postapocalyptic landscape\, and a rarefied cinematic experience like no other. A hired guide—the Stalker—leads a writer and a professor into the heart of the Zone\, the restricted site of a long-ago disaster\, where the three men eventually zero in on the Room\, a place rumored to fulfill one’s most deeply held desires. Adapting Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky\, Tarkovsky created an immersive world with a wealth of material detail and a sense of organic atmosphere. A religious allegory\, a reflection of contemporaneous political anxieties\, a meditation on film itself—Stalker envelops the viewer by opening up a multitude of possible meanings. \nAttendees are invited to stay afterward for a discussion about the film. Admission by donation. \nBrooks Memorial Library and the Latchis Theater are thrilled to invite you to the first installment of this new exciting program.

What’s WiFi?  Is it the same as cellular?  What’s WiFi Calling?

SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet in the Quiet Reading Room from 7:00pm – 8:30pm to discuss Dawn by Octavia E. Butler! \nWhen Lilith lyapo wakes from a centuries-long sleep\, she finds herself aboard the vast spaceship of the Oankali. She discovers that the Oankali—a seemingly benevolent alien race—intervened in the fate of the humanity hundreds of years ago\, saving everyone who survived a nuclear war from a dying\, ruined Earth and then putting them into a deep sleep. After learning all they could about Earth and its beings\, the Oankali healed the planet\, cured cancer\, increased human strength\, and they now want Lilith to lead her people back to Earth—but salvation comes at a price. \nPlease note that this SFRG will be meeting on the fourth Monday of the month! The Sci-Fi Reading Group typically meets the third Monday of every month and is open to curious minds of all ages\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.
