SUMMARY:May Sci-Fi Reading Group Meetup
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet Tuesday\, May 16th\, in the Quiet Reading Room from 7-8:30 pm to discuss Upright Women Wanted by Sarah Gailey. \nFrom Goodreads:\n“Esther is a stowaway. She’s hidden herself away in the Librarian’s book wagon in an attempt to escape the marriage her father has arranged for her—a marriage to the man who was previously engaged to her best friend. Her best friend who she was in love with. Her best friend who was just executed for possession of resistance propaganda.\n \nThe future American Southwest is full of bandits\, fascists\, and queer librarian spies on horseback trying to do the right thing. They’ll bring the fight to you. \nIn Upright Women Wanted\, award-winning author Sarah Gailey reinvents the pulp Western with an explicitly antifascist\, near-future story of queer identity.” \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Tuesday of every month and is open to curious minds of all ages\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.

SUMMARY:April Sci-Fi Reading Group Meetup
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet Tuesday\, April 18th\, in the Quiet Reading Room from 7-8:30 pm to discuss Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer. \nFrom Goodreads: \n“Area X has been cut off from the rest of the world for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine\, Edenic landscape; the second expedition ended in mass suicide\, the third in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another. The members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves\, and within weeks\, all had died of cancer. In Annihilation\, the first volume of Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy\, we join the twelfth expedition. \nThe group is made up of four women: an anthropologist; a surveyor; a psychologist\, the de facto leader; and our narrator\, a biologist. Their mission is to map the terrain\, record all observations of their surroundings and of one another\, and\, above all\, avoid being contaminated by Area X itself. \nThey arrive expecting the unexpected\, and Area X delivers—but it’s the surprises that came across the border with them and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another that change everything.” \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Tuesday of every month and is open to curious minds of all ages\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.

SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Reading Group March Meetup
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet Tuesday\, March 21st. in the Quiet Reading Room from 7-8:30 pm to discuss Riot Baby by Tochi Onyebuchi. \nFrom Goodreads: \n“Ella has a Thing. She sees a classmate grow up to become a caring nurse. A neighbor’s son murdered in a drive-by shooting. Things that haven’t happened yet. Kev\, born while Los Angeles burned around them\, wants to protect his sister from a power that could destroy her. But when Kev is incarcerated\, Ella must decide what it means to watch her brother suffer while holding the ability to wreck cities in her hands.\nRooted in the hope that can live in anger\, Riot Baby is as much an intimate family story as a global dystopian narrative. It burns fearlessly toward revolution and has quietly devastating things to say about love\, fury\, and the black American experience.\nElla and Kev are both shockingly human and immeasurably powerful. Their childhoods are defined and destroyed by racism. Their futures might alter the world.” \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Tuesday of every month and is open to curious minds of all ages\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.

SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Reading Group February Meetup
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet Tuesday\, February 21st in the Quiet Reading Room from 7-8:30 pm to discuss Binti by Nnedi Okorafor. \nFrom Goodreads: \n“Her name is Binti\, and she is the first of the Himba people ever to be offered a place at Oomza University\, the finest institution of higher learning in the galaxy. But to accept the offer will mean giving up her place in her family to travel between the stars among strangers who do not share her ways or respect her customs…If Binti hopes to survive the legacy of a war not of her making\, she will need both the the gifts of her people and the wisdom enshrined within the University\, itself — but first she has to make it there\, alive.” \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Tuesday of every month and is open to curious minds of all ages\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.

SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Reading Group November Meetup- The Word for World is Forest
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet Monday\, November 21st in the Quiet Reading Room from 7-8:30 pm to discuss The Word for World is Forest by Ursula K. LeGuin. \nFrom Goodreads: \n“Centuries in the future\, Terrans have established a logging colony & military base named “New Tahiti” on a tree-covered planet whose small\, green-furred\, big-eyed inhabitants have a culture centered on lucid dreaming. Terran greed spirals around native innocence & wisdom\, overturning the ancient society...Terran colonists take over the planet locals call Athshe\, meaning “forest\,” rather than “dirt\,” like their home planet Terra. They follow the 19th century model of colonization: felling trees\, planting farms\, digging mines & enslaving indigenous peoples. The natives are unequipped to comprehend this. They’re a subsistence race who rely on the forests & have no cultural precedent for tyranny\, slavery or war. The invaders take their land without resistance until one fatal act sets rebellion in motion & changes the people of both worlds forever. ” \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group Meets the third Monday of every month and is open to readers and dreamers of all ages. Even those who haven’t read the book are welcome to join! We are always taking suggestions for books for future discussions.

SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Reading Group September Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Come discover and discuss great science fiction with the Sci-Fi Reading Group!\nSeptember’s Book will be Artificial Condition by Martha Wells\, the follow-up to the hugely popular All Systems Red \nBook Synopsis via marthawells.com: \n“It has a dark past — one in which a number of humans were killed. A past that caused it to christen itself “Murderbot.” But it has only vague memories of the massacre that spawned that title\, and it wants to know more. Teaming up with a Research Transport vessel named ART (you don’t want to know what the “A” stands for)\, Murderbot heads to the mining facility where it went rogue.\nWhat it discovers will forever change the way it thinks… ” \nThe book is available in physical and digital format from the library and all ages are welcome to attend\, even if they haven’t read the book! We are also open to suggestions for other great sci-fi titles to read at future meet-ups. \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets on the third Monday of every month from 7-8:30pm in the Quiet Reading Room at the library.

SUMMARY:Sci-fi Reading Group: "All Systems Red"
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow sci-fi lovers for the Brooks Memorial Library Sci-Fi Reading Group! The group will be diving into some of the best new books the genre has to offer! \nWe will be kicking things off on Monday\, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Brooks Memorial Library. We will be discussing “All Systems Red” by Martha Wells\, the first novella in her Murderbot Diaries series. A synopsis of the novella is as follows: \n In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future\, a self-aware Security Unit hacks its own governor module while shadowing a team of scientists conducting surface tests on a distant planet. Disgusted by the humans\, it could go on a rampage and live up to its self-assigned moniker\, “Murderbot”\, but it would honestly rather be binge watching TV on a loop. All Murderbot wants is to get through the day. That is\, until something else threatens to kill the humans. \nBeginning in September\, meetings will be held on the third Monday of every month. \nFor more updates from Brooks Memorial Library\, visit brookslibraryvt.org\, where you can sign up for the library newsletter. Follow the library on Facebook at @BrooksMemorialLibrary and the Children’s Room at @BrooksMemorialLibraryCR. Brooks Memorial Library is located at 224 Main St.\, Brattleboro\, VT 05301. The library is open Mon-Weds: 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Thurs-Fri: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.; and Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.  The venue is accessible to people in wheelchairs.
