DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet in the Quiet Reading Room from 7:00pm – 8:30pm to discuss The Practice\, the Horizon\, and the Chain by Sofia Samatar! \nThe boy was raised as one of the Chained\, condemned to toil in the bowels of a mining ship out among the stars. His whole world changes—literally—when he is yanked “upstairs” and informed he has been given an opportunity to be educated at the ship’s university alongside the elite.Overwhelmed and alone\, the boy forms a bond with the woman he comes to know as “the professor\,” a weary idealist and descendent of the Chained who has spent her career striving for validation from her more senior colleagues\, only to fall short at every turn.Together\, the boy and the woman will embark on a transformative journey to grasp the design of the chains that fetter them both—and are the key to breaking free. \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Monday of every month and is open to curious minds\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.

Participants will develop a deeper understanding of these creatures’ forms and behaviors\, which are essential for community science projects tracking species populations. \n  \nIllustration for Science!\nSummer of Community Science Art Workshop Series\nAdult Summer Reading Program \nWorkshop I: Butterflies + Moths — Saturday\, July 19 \nWorkshop II: Birds — Saturday\, July 26 \nWorkshop III: Local Botanicals — Saturday\, August 23 \nJoin us for a series of three nature-inspired classes designed for adults and youth ages 15 and up. These hour-and-a-half workshops will focus on the skill of close observation\, a vital gift of drawing from life\, which connects the visual arts with the sciences. Each workshop provides an opportunity to explore the natural world while learning to create detailed illustrations that could contribute to community science projects. \nThroughout these workshops\, the emphasis is on learning how to see the natural world through a new lens. DESCRIPTION:The Brattleboro and Guilford Conservation Commissions\, Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center (BEEC)\, and Brooks Memorial Library are presenting an exciting opportunity to participate in community science! \nJoin Dana Williams from the Vermont Center for Ecostudies for a fun-filled day of learning about the butterflies of Windham County and how you can contribute to the Vermont Butterfly Atlas. Volunteers are needed to help search fields and fens\, mountains and meadows\, and even their own backyards to document the status of Vermont’s butterflies. Your efforts will help scientists detect changes in butterfly populations and provide essential information to protect butterflies and preserve their habitat. \nVermont Butterfly Atlas Workshop\n11am at Brooks Memorial Library \nThis indoor workshop will introduce the Vermont Butterfly Atlas and teach us how to observe and identify butterflies in the wild and report our sightings using eButterfly and iNaturalist. The Vermont Butterfly Atlas has already documented four species new or rediscovered in the state! Learn about community science field work and conservation efforts\, and ask questions about the finer points of butterfly identification and natural history. \nButterfly Bioblitz\n12:30pm at Hogle Wildlife Sanctuary (entrance at Eaton Avenue\, Brattleboro) \nDiscover the fascinating world of butterflying by joining an expedition at our local wildlife sanctuary. This hands-on exploration will help us survey the butterfly and insect populations and identify host plants and anything interesting we encounter. We will investigate the trail and meadows for butterflies nectaring or using a host plant (egg-laying or caterpillars feeding). Through a revolutionary method known as somaforming\, astronauts can survive in hostile environments off Earth using synthetic biological supplementations. They can produce antifreeze in subzero temperatures\, absorb radiation and convert it for food\, and conveniently adjust to the pull of different gravitational forces. With the fragility of the body no longer a limiting factor\, human beings are at last able to journey to neighboring exoplanets long known to harbor life. \nA team of these explorers\, Ariadne O’Neill and her three crewmates\, are hard at work in a planetary system fifteen light-years from Sol\, on a mission to ecologically survey four habitable worlds. But as Ariadne shifts through both form and time\, the culture back on Earth has also been transformed.
