SUMMARY:Windham County Genealogy Interest Group June Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Windham County Genealogy Interest Group will meet at the Brooks Memorial Library and on Zoom\, Saturday\, June 27\, 2026\, 11:00 AM to 1:00PM\n\n\n\nTopics will include “Gravestone & Cemetery Records  Research; the 1926 Irish Census  and Researching an Artifact.” The meeting is Free and open to all.\n\n\n\nPlease register at this link https://bit.ly/WCGIG-2026.\n\n\n\n“Using Gravestones and Cemetery Records for Genealogy”\n\nUsing gravestones and cemetery records can break through genealogical “brick walls” by providing birth/death dates\, maiden names\, and clues to family relationships\, especially for individuals who died before mandatory vital records.  Locating a burial site is possible by using online databases\, death certificates or funeral homes.\n\n\nAnalyzing the gravestone is important by documenting everything: Checking all sides\, cleaning the stone without damaging it\, interpreting symbols and art to obtain clues to the person’s life.  (As an aside\, we will take a look at the “Rockingham School” of cemetery art.)\n\n\nCemetery records will show who owns the plot and the people buried there. Burial registers may give details like cause of death\, age\, and place of death.   Research strategies include checking on neighboring graves for relatives\, name variations\, and verifying information that is on the memorial.\n\n\n\n“Let’s Find Out about the  Newly Released 1926 Irish Census” \n\nThe 1926 Irish Census was released publicly on April 18\, 2026\, following the 100 year rule that embargo census returns in Ireland. The population of 2\,971\,992 residents  was surveyed and collected across 26 counties. The unique part of this census release was the first time household members could complete their own census form in the Irish language.\n\n\nSome of the other enhancements in this census include: the age of members of a household are expressed in years and months rather than just in years;  detailed occupations and workplace address were added \, as well as a couples’ martial status.\n\n\nWe will take a  look at the National Archives of Ireland website to search the census. If you have any ancestors living in Ireland at that time\, send their names and county of residence  to windhamcountygig@gmail.com.\n\n\n\nHow to Research an Artifact\n\nLynne Snyder will provide an overview of how to search an historic family heirloom or artifact. She will use a barometer that  was owned by a great uncle to demonstrate how to find the provenance and other facts about these family keepsakes.\n\n\n\nFOR MORE INFORMATION:\nWindham County Genealogy Interest Group\nwindhamcountygig@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Windham County Genealogy Interest Group September Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Discover Your Revolutionary War Ancestors & Researching in the Vermont Historical Society Portal \n\nThe fall meeting of the Windham County Genealogy Interest Group will focus on “Discover Your Revolutionary War Ancestors” & “Researching in the Vermont Historical Society Portal”\, on Saturday\, September 20\, 2025\, from 10:30 AM to 12:30PM\, by Zoom and at Brooks Memorial Library. In case of inclement weather\, it will be Zoom only. Free and open to all. \nPlease register at this link: https://bit.ly/WCGIG2025 . A Zoom link will be sent before the meeting. For those people in the local vicinity\, an in-person meeting will also be conducted at Brooks Memorial Library\, 224 Main St.\, Brattleboro\, Vermont. \n “Discover Your Revolutionary War Ancestors” \nThis year begins the 250th anniversary of the Revolution. If an ancestor was in America at the time of the Revolution (1775-1783) and was of age to serve\, now is the best time to find possible military service\, land bounty\, and pension records. Even if a lineal ancestor did not serve\, perhaps a relative did\, and records might include information about others in the family. Using databases such as the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Genealogical Research System and resources at the National Archives\, as well as tools at Ancestry and Family Search should yield information about ancestors that is found nowhere else. “This is a wonderful opportunity to connect your family story to the founding of our country”\, said Wayne Blanchard who will lead the session. \n“Researching Vermont Through the Vermont Historical Society Website” \nThe Vermont Historical Society was chartered in 1n 1838 as an independent non-profit dedicated to exploring the rich heritage of Vermont. The Vermont History Center is located in Barre\, Vermont and the Vermont History Museum is located in Montpelier. Both institution contain over 30\,000 items to assist the general public and researchers. The VHS website provides access to these items through its library catalog\, its museum catalog\, digital resources\, Vermont History Journal\, and Vermont stories\, which includes curated podcasts and videos. We will explore these points of access to retrieve vital information that may help in your genealogy research. \nFor more information\, please contact the Windham County Genealogy Interest Group: windhamcountygig@gmail.com
