SUMMARY:June Sci-Fi Reading Group Meetup
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet Tuesday\, June 20th\, in the Quiet Reading Room from 7-8:30 pm to discuss In the Watchful City by S. Qiouyi Lu. \nFrom Goodreads: \n“The city of Ora uses a complex living network called the Gleaming to surveil its inhabitants and maintain harmony. Anima is one of the cloistered extrasensory humans tasked with watching over Ora’s citizens. Although ær world is restricted to what æ can see and experience through the Gleaming\, Anima takes pride and comfort in keeping Ora safe from all harm. \nAll that changes when a mysterious visitor enters the city carrying a cabinet of curiosities from around the world\, with a story attached to each item. As Anima’s world expands beyond the borders of Ora to places—and possibilities—æ never before imagined to exist\, æ finds ærself asking a question that throws into doubt ær entire purpose: What good is a city if it can’t protect its people? \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Tuesday of every month and is open to curious minds of all ages\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.

SUMMARY:May Sci-Fi Reading Group Meetup
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet Tuesday\, May 16th\, in the Quiet Reading Room from 7-8:30 pm to discuss Upright Women Wanted by Sarah Gailey. \nFrom Goodreads:\n“Esther is a stowaway. She’s hidden herself away in the Librarian’s book wagon in an attempt to escape the marriage her father has arranged for her—a marriage to the man who was previously engaged to her best friend. Her best friend who she was in love with. Her best friend who was just executed for possession of resistance propaganda.\n \nThe future American Southwest is full of bandits\, fascists\, and queer librarian spies on horseback trying to do the right thing. They’ll bring the fight to you. \nIn Upright Women Wanted\, award-winning author Sarah Gailey reinvents the pulp Western with an explicitly antifascist\, near-future story of queer identity.” \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Tuesday of every month and is open to curious minds of all ages\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.

SUMMARY:April Sci-Fi Reading Group Meetup
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet Tuesday\, April 18th\, in the Quiet Reading Room from 7-8:30 pm to discuss Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer. \nFrom Goodreads: \n“Area X has been cut off from the rest of the world for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine\, Edenic landscape; the second expedition ended in mass suicide\, the third in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another. The members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves\, and within weeks\, all had died of cancer. In Annihilation\, the first volume of Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy\, we join the twelfth expedition. \nThe group is made up of four women: an anthropologist; a surveyor; a psychologist\, the de facto leader; and our narrator\, a biologist. Their mission is to map the terrain\, record all observations of their surroundings and of one another\, and\, above all\, avoid being contaminated by Area X itself. \nThey arrive expecting the unexpected\, and Area X delivers—but it’s the surprises that came across the border with them and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another that change everything.” \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Tuesday of every month and is open to curious minds of all ages\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.

SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Reading Group March Meetup
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet Tuesday\, March 21st. in the Quiet Reading Room from 7-8:30 pm to discuss Riot Baby by Tochi Onyebuchi. \nFrom Goodreads: \n“Ella has a Thing. She sees a classmate grow up to become a caring nurse. A neighbor’s son murdered in a drive-by shooting. Things that haven’t happened yet. Kev\, born while Los Angeles burned around them\, wants to protect his sister from a power that could destroy her. But when Kev is incarcerated\, Ella must decide what it means to watch her brother suffer while holding the ability to wreck cities in her hands.\nRooted in the hope that can live in anger\, Riot Baby is as much an intimate family story as a global dystopian narrative. It burns fearlessly toward revolution and has quietly devastating things to say about love\, fury\, and the black American experience.\nElla and Kev are both shockingly human and immeasurably powerful. Their childhoods are defined and destroyed by racism. Their futures might alter the world.” \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Tuesday of every month and is open to curious minds of all ages\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.

SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Reading Group February Meetup
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet Tuesday\, February 21st in the Quiet Reading Room from 7-8:30 pm to discuss Binti by Nnedi Okorafor. \nFrom Goodreads: \n“Her name is Binti\, and she is the first of the Himba people ever to be offered a place at Oomza University\, the finest institution of higher learning in the galaxy. SUMMARY:Engaged Buddhism and American Politics Today
DESCRIPTION:With Rev. Doctor Thomas Redden \nMain Reading Room 7:00 pm \nOptional meditation in Community Meeting Room\, 6:15 – 6:40 \nBeginners welcome at 6:00 for an introduction \nWhat if the Buddhist values of loving-kindness and compassion were at the heart of a political philosophy\, what we might call a ‘Politics of Compassion\,’ in 21st century USA?  Explore the Buddha’s world\, his politics\, and what an ‘Engaged Buddhism’ looks like in the US today through a series of three programs with Rev. Dr. Thomas Redden\, PhD\, Professor Emeritus of Political Science and History\, Southern Vermont College & Marlboro College\, and ordained Zen Buddhist priest\, Zen Peacemaker Order. \nThe series: \nThe Buddha’s World: October 19. The historic Buddha lived at a time of dramatic change technologically\, economically\, socially and politically. Dr. Redden will examine those changes and how the Buddha’s teachings challenged the traditional Brahmanism of his day and resonated with his many followers. \nThe Buddha as Political Actor: November 16. As the leader of religious community numbering in the thousands in Eastern India\, the Buddha needed to maintain good relations with the local kings and communities in order to thrive in a very political and often violent environment.  As a result\, he developed distinctive leadership styles toward his followers as well as the local rulers. Above all\, he was pragmatic\, non-dogmatic and flexible. \nEngaged Buddhism and American Politics Today: December 21.  With the global climate crisis and other daunting political issues clearly in their sight\, a variety of leading ‘Engaged Buddhists\,’ such as the Dalai Lama\, argue that our search for happiness through consumerism and naked self-interest is leading us down a path of self-destruction.  Engaged Buddhism works toward personal and social transformation with the aspiration of creating societies based on compassion and justice. \nThe lectures will be held in the Main Reading Room at 7 pm. Each presentation will be preceded by a short period of Zen meditation in the Community Meeting Room from 6:15-6:40 for those interested. Beginners are welcome to arrive at 6 for a brief introduction. \nThe program is free and open to the public. The venue\, 224 Main St. in Brattleboro\, is accessible to people in wheelchairs.  For more information visit www.brookslibraryvt.org or call 802-254-5290 ex 1201.

SUMMARY:Sci-Fi Reading Group December Meet Up
DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet Monday\, December 19th in the Quiet Reading Room from 7-8:30 pm to discuss This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone. \nFrom Goodreads:  “Among the ashes of a dying world\, an agent of the Commandant finds a letter. It reads: Burn before reading. Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. Now\, what began as a taunt\, a battlefield boast\, grows into something more. Something epic. Something romantic. Something that could change the past and the future.” \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group Meets the third Monday of every month and is open to readers and dreamers of all ages. Even those who haven’t read the book are welcome to join! We are always taking suggestions for books for future discussions.
