SUMMARY:Engaged Buddhism: The Buddha's World
DESCRIPTION:With Rev. Doctor Thomas Redden \nMain Reading Room 7:00 pm \nOptional meditation in Community Meeting Room\, 6:15 – 6:40 \nBeginners welcome at 6:00 for an introduction \nWhat if the Buddhist values of loving-kindness and compassion were at the heart of a political philosophy\, what we might call a ‘Politics of Compassion\,’ in 21st century USA?  Explore the Buddha’s world\, his politics\, and what an ‘Engaged Buddhism’ looks like in the US today through a series of three programs with Rev. Dr. Thomas Redden\, PhD\, Professor Emeritus of Political Science and History\, Southern Vermont College & Marlboro College\, and ordained Zen Buddhist priest\, Zen Peacemaker Order. \nThe series: \nThe Buddha’s World: October 19. The historic Buddha lived at a time of dramatic change technologically\, economically\, socially and politically. Dr. Redden will examine those changes and how the Buddha’s teachings challenged the traditional Brahmanism of his day and resonated with his many followers. \nThe Buddha as Political Actor: November 16. As the leader of religious community numbering in the thousands in Eastern India\, the Buddha needed to maintain good relations with the local kings and communities in order to thrive in a very political and often violent environment.  As a result\, he developed distinctive leadership styles toward his followers as well as the local rulers. Above all\, he was pragmatic\, non-dogmatic and flexible. \nEngaged Buddhism and American Politics Today: December 21.  With the global climate crisis and other daunting political issues clearly in their sight\, a variety of leading ‘Engaged Buddhists\,’ such as the Dalai Lama\, argue that our search for happiness through consumerism and naked self-interest is leading us down a path of self-destruction.  Engaged Buddhism works toward personal and social transformation with the aspiration of creating societies based on compassion and justice. \nThe lectures will be held in the Main Reading Room at 7 pm. Each presentation will be preceded by a short period of Zen meditation in the Community Meeting Room from 6:15-6:40 for those interested. Beginners are welcome to arrive at 6 for a brief introduction. \nThe program is free and open to the public. The venue\, 224 Main St. in Brattleboro\, is accessible to people in wheelchairs.  For more information visit www.brookslibraryvt.org or call 802-254-5290 ex 1201.

SUMMARY:First Wednesdays: The Electric Period of Miles Davis
DESCRIPTION:With Reuben Jackson\nThe ever-changing music that Miles Davis recorded from 1969 to 1975 angered and bewildered many critics and fans\, who accused the trumpeter of “selling out.” Jazz archivist and poet Reuben Jackson shares how recordings from Davis’ “Electric Period”—including 1974’s Get Up With It—prove otherwise. \n \nReuben Jackson is the Archivist with the University of The District of Columbia’s Felix E. Grant Jazz Archives. For 20 years he was archivist and curator with the Smithsonian Institution’s Duke Ellington Collection. He was also host of Vermont Public Radio’s Friday Night Jazz from 2012 until 2018. His music reviews have appeared in The Washington Post\, Jazziz\, Jazz Times\, and on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. He is also the author of two books of poetry- 1990’s fingering the keys (Gut Punch Press)-and 2019’s Scattered Clouds (Alan Squire Publishing). \nThe First Wednesdays series includes in-person events in Fall and Spring with virtual events in the Winter. Director of Programs Ryan Newswanger said of the new format: “Many of our attendees in recent years have told us they value viewing First Wednesdays talks from the comfort of their homes\, especially during the winter months.” Click for the full First Wednesdays schedule for 2022-23 \nThe Brattleboro series is funded by the Friends of Brooks Memorial Library. \n \nThe program is free of charge and open to the public. The venue\, 224 Main St. in Brattleboro\, is accessible to people in wheelchairs.  For more information visit www.brookslibraryvt.org or call 802-254-5290 \nUnderwriter: Peter Gilbert Endowment Fund \nMiles Davis Image by r2hox

SUMMARY:Enjoying James Joyce’s Ulysses\, An After-hours Bloomsday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Special after-hours event to celebrate James Joyce’s Ulysses at Brooks Memorial Library \nOn June 16 people around the world celebrate the day in 1904 when Leopold and Molly Bloom\, Stephen Dedalus and a host of other Dubliners from all walks of life experienced the full range of human events and emotions in James Joyce’s novel Ulysses\, in a single turn around the sun. The public is invited to join in a special Bloomsday celebration after regular library hours: \nJune 16th at 7 pm \n\nin the Main Reading Room of Brooks Memorial Library\, 224 Main St\, in Brattleboro.\nand via Zoom at:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/88544347541?pwd=UFBRN0NXOFdobFNOWW1oaklnY3ZmUT09 Meeting ID: 885 4434 7541\nPasscode: BVuL22\n\nJon Mack will celebrate the novel by following the threads of the stories in this groundbreaking work through readings and explorations of excerpts from the extraordinary text. \n“I’ve been fascinated with James Joyce’s Ulysses for many years\, so I’m excited to be hosting a Bloomsday event at the library.  Joyce’s novel is a many splendored jewel that has astonished readers ever since it was first published 100 years ago\, yet many readers find it all but incomprehensible.  The aim of my presentation is to made the work more approachable and understandable by providing some connective tissue with readings of selected excerpts from the novel”\, says Mack.  “Joyce’s work is a celebration of the written word in all its complexity. Ultimately\, it is a human tale\, full of both comedy and drama of life. I’m excited to be giving the presentation in our public library for Bloomsday 2022.  Nowhere could be a more appropriate venue than a public library. James Joyce’s epic work emerged from being banned for being too literal\, too real than the duly appointed censors of the US of that time would allow.” \nAfter the readings\, there will be recommendations on how to find the best resources to make your reading enjoyable and we will open up conversation to those participating in-person or online. \nThe program is free and open to the public. As Joyce writes in Ulysses\, “Every life is in many days\, day after day. We walk through ourselves\, meeting robbers\, ghosts\, giants\, old men\, young men\, wives\, widows\, brothers-in-love\, but always meeting ourselves.” Do drop by\, you never know who might show up. \nFor more information\, call 802.254.5290 ex. 1201 or visit www.brookslibraryvt.org. \nSketch of Leopold Bloom by James Joyce

SUMMARY:Chrysalis: Poetry by Michael Carignan
DESCRIPTION:Join local poet Michael John Carignan for an afternoon program featuring selections from Chrysalis\, his recently-published collection from Austin Macauley Publishers. \n“Immerse yourself in a ride of the authors imagination. Traveling diverse roads from keen observation\, exploring the growth from boyhood to manhood\, from exhilaration to the pinnacles of deep despair. Themes of nature protrude their heads spanning all four seasons. Curl up to browse the pages in a quiet room and let your mind wander the corridors of imagination that come to life in this book a collection gathered by my muse of a flawed utopia\,viewed by many perspectives of a world shining bright. This is the hatching of ideas.” \nMichael Carignan published his first collection\, Quintessence\, in 1992\, and has since published several individual pieces in local magazines\, newspapers and anthologies including Oyez Review at Roosevelt University in Chicago. He has worked in a local school with the fourth grade class\, culminating in a collection of every child’s poem. He has worked with area artists in the impression of his poems through music and visual art. Mike has performed in several coffeehouses in the past both reading his work and doing improv poetry.

SUMMARY:Meet and Greet with Archer Mayor
DESCRIPTION:Find Out What’s New from Archer Mayor at Brooks Memorial Library! \nBrattleboro\, VT ~ Get the lowdown on Marked Man\, the latest novel featuring Brattleboro’s famous fictional detective Joe Gunther on Saturday\, October 2nd at Brooks Memorial Library\, 224 Main St.  Join us for an outdoor opportunity to meet and greet acclaimed author Archer Mayor\, from 11:00 am -1:00 pm on the plaza in front of the library.  Copies of Marked Man will be available for sale and signing from Everyone’s Books. \nReaders will revel in the masterful storytelling as bestseller Mayor expertly juggles four plotlines\, which may or may not be related\, in his 32nd mystery.  A year after the death of affluent Nathan Lyon from natural causes while under hospice care\, a medical student dissecting his corpse determines that Lyon was strangled\, prompting Gunther to launch a murder inquiry. The eccentric Lyon had most of his family\, and thus most of those with an obvious motive to kill him\, living together in a huge home that also housed several stores. As Gunther tries to find clues so long after the murder\, a second member of the Lyon clan dies\, this time from an apparently accidental fall. Meanwhile\, PI Sally Kravitz is retained by the wife of one of Lyon’s sons\, who suspects an employee is stealing from her business. Finally\, two Mafia hit men are trying to identify the person who ordered a killing that one of them admitted to and did time for\, but now claims not to have committed. \nGunther’s case-solving prowess has appeared in books annually since 1988. The series routinely gathers high praise from such sources as The New York Times\, Washington Post\, Los Angeles Times\, and The New Yorker\, with books often appearing on annual ten best lists\, and is popular with fellow mystery writers.  Louise Penny says\, “As a longtime fan of Archer Mayor\, and Gunther\, I say Bravo\, and keep them coming!” \n  \nDescribed by the Chicago Tribune as “the best police procedurals being written in America\,” Archer Mayor loosely bases his novels on his actual experience in the field. He has served as a firefighter/EMT and a police officer\, and continues to work as a death investigator for Vermont’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. \n  \nThe program is free and open to the public and is accessible to people in wheelchairs.
