SUMMARY:John Van Der Does - Author Event
DESCRIPTION:John Van Der Does – an author living in Chester\, Vermont – will share readings from his autobiographical accounts of his experiences in Vietnam.  During the war\, John wrote an extensive interview with the author Anton Wilson\, an article in a French newspaper chronicling the struggles of people living on the barges on the banks of the Seine\, and a book of poetry. \nJohn had been hired to work on a film script with the famous director Jodorosky\, but the chaos involved with this eccentric individual caused him to quit. \nJohn is currently writing a novel whose main characters are a doctoral student and a taxi driver who uncover mysterious links between two literary giants in documents discovered in an attic in France.

SUMMARY:Make a Mini-Crankie
DESCRIPTION:What’s A Crankie?  Picture a hand-painted scroll that moves through a wooden box while a performer sings\, plays music\, or tells a story. It’s part folk art\, part theater\, part magic. Workshop attendees will build a miniature Crankie out of a matchbox and matchsticks with a turning mechanism for the scroll. Each participant will design and create the scroll and render it in four images. In the course of two hours\, everyone will create an entire Crankie! This workshop is for participants ages 15 and up. DESCRIPTION:Starting this November\, Center for Solace (formerly Brattleboro Area Hospice) & Brooks Memorial Library\nhave begun an 8-month collaboration on the first Wednesday of each month\, from 6-8 pm. \nCome join us for a wide range of conversations\non tender topics\, from Death Cafes\, to film & discussion nights\,\nspeaker panels\, a climate-grief dialogue\, and more. \nTogether we’ll explore some of the challenges of being alive in our time.\nFor instance\, how might we navigate illness\, caregiving\, or loss?\nOr beyond that\, face a much broader anguish for our fragile planet itself?\nBecause we know that at least one form of solace\nstems from staying connected. \nTo quote poet David Whyte\, “Solace is not meant to be\nan answer\, but an invitation\, through the door of pain and difficulty\,\nto the depth of suffering and simultaneous beauty in the world\nthat the strategic mind by itself cannot grasp or make sense of.”   \n  For this second session on 12/03\, the topic of exploration is Navigating Grief During Holidays\n(& anytime). \n\n  \nCome join us to explore this universal topic:  whatever we may celebrate\,\nlosing or missing a loved one at holidays (or birthdays & other milestones) can certainly\ncompound our grief.  How do we hold space for that added emotion\, as well as honor\nthe lives of those we’ve lost?\n  \nTo find out about further topics\, please follow\nCenter for Solace or Brooks Memorial Library on Facebook:\ncenterforsolace.org\, or brookslibraryvt.org.
