SUMMARY:A Lifeline for Difficult Times: The Taking Solace Series
DESCRIPTION:Starting last November\, Center for Solace (formerly Brattleboro Area Hospice) & Brooks Memorial Library\nbegan an 8-month collaboration on the first Wednesday of each month\, from 6-8 pm. \nCome join us for a wide range of conversations\non tender topics\, from Death Cafes\, to film & discussion nights\,\nspeaker panels\, a climate-grief dialogue\, and more. \nTogether we’ll explore some of the challenges of being alive in our time.\nFor instance\, how might we navigate illness\, caregiving\, or loss?\nOr beyond that\, face a much broader anguish for our fragile planet itself?\nBecause we know that at least one form of solace\nstems from staying connected. \nTo quote poet David Whyte\, “Solace is not meant to be\nan answer\, but an invitation\, through the door of pain and difficulty\,\nto the depth of suffering and simultaneous beauty in the world\nthat the strategic mind by itself cannot grasp or make sense of.”   \nFebruary’s Topic: Holding Our Own \nCome join us in the Main Reading Room on Wednesday\, February 4th to watch Holding Our Own. This inspiring one-hour film features the work of local artist Deidre Scherer and the music of Center for Solace chorus Hallowell. It will be followed by a community dialogue about the unique power of the arts to help offer solace in difficult times.   \nAnd to find out about further topics\, please follow\nCenter for Solace or Brooks Memorial Library on Facebook:\ncenterforsolace.org\, or brookslibraryvt.org.

SUMMARY:Finding a Place in the Natural World as a Huntress - with Deborah Lee Luskin
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the launch of the new memoir\, Reviving Artemis: The Making of a Huntress\, with local author Deborah Lee Luskin in an inspiring discussion and book signing.  Books will be available for purchase. \nAbout Reviving Artemis: The Making of a Huntress: \nReviving Artemis is the unlikely story of a woman raised in mid-twentieth-century suburbia who lived in New York City as a young adult and moved to Vermont in 1984. For more than thirty years\, she raised domestic livestock\, kept bees\, and cultivated fruits and vegetables while teaching literature and telling stories. But when she turned sixty\, something shifted. Luskin was overtaken by a primal urge to step out of the garden\, off the blazed trails\, and into untracked forest by learning to hunt deer. Deeply personal\, lyrically told\, and funny\, Reviving Artemis reveals Luskin’s ambivalence about guns and her fear of entering the forest alone in the dark. \nShe persisted\, using her literary acumen to read the forest and\, as thoughtfully as she hunts for words\, to hunt for deer. With the stories of Artemis\, goddess of the hunt\, childbirth\, and wild nature to inspire her\, Luskin became a huntress\, determined to age fiercely and compelled to tell this story of finding her place in the natural world. \nAbout Deborah Lee Luskin: \nDeborah Lee Luskin moved from New York City to Vermont in 1984 to write\, keep bees\, and raise daughters. She has been an editorial columnist\, radio commentator\, pen-for-hire\, and blogger. Her first novel\, Into the Wilderness\, won the Independent Publishers Gold Medal for Regional Fiction. Luskin has also enjoyed a long career as an educator\, teaching writing and literature-based humanities classes to gifted elementary writers\, college students\, new adult readers\, life-long learners\, healthcare workers\, and prison inmates. She holds a PhD in English Literature and expected to become an academic\, not a deer hunter. She lives in Vermont with her husband\, their dog\, usually a cat\, and a variable number of chickens.

They come from a variety of countries and regions\, including Argentina\, Chile\, Colombia\, Costa Rica\, Cuba\, Haiti\, Honduras\, Mexico\, Peru\, Puerto Rico\, Spain\, and Venezuela. SUMMARY:The Resplendent Quetzal: Tourism and Land Use in Costa Rica - with Dr. Alan Poole
DESCRIPTION:This joint program\, co-sponsored by Brooks Memorial Library and Southeastern Vermont Audubon Society (SVAS)\, provides an accessible\, well-illustrated look at the life history of the Resplendent Quetzal — a dazzling\, legendary bird of the highland forests of Central America. Aztec and Mayan cultures revered this quetzal\, and today’s bird-watchers\, thousands of whom visit quetzal forests each year\, are only slightly less in awe. \nDr. Alan Poole\, the author of a recently published book on Resplendent Quetzals (Cornell Univ. Press\, 2023)\, will describe through the nesting ecology of this bird\, its role in Mayan and Aztec religions\, and how it fits into the increasingly threatened cloud forests that sustain it. The talk will also take a look at what lies ahead for this (and other) quetzals — how conservation efforts are giving them a boost\, and what threats Mesoamerican cloud forests are facing. \nAbove all this talk will examine land use in Central America\, especially Costa Rica\, through a quetzal lens — no species does more to bring current land use trends in this region into focus. Understanding these trends is key to maintaining the viability of highland tropical forests in the Americas\, and the quetzals that depend on them. \n++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ \nALAN POOLE\, an Associate of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, was editor of the Birds of North America life history series (18 volumes\, 18\,000 pages) for 22 years. He lives along the coast of southeastern Massachusetts\, and spends winters in the highlands of Costa Rica\, where quetzals are a highlight. \n++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ \nNote: This program will be at 7PM on Tuesday\, May 20 in the Main Reading Room\, and will take place instead of the monthly SVAS meeting.

DESCRIPTION:In this final speaker series program co-hosted with Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center (BEEC)\, David Allen Sibley\, renowned ornithologist and illustrator\, invites backyard birders to step into the world of scientific discovery. While birdwatching is often seen as a leisurely hobby\, Sibley will reveal how everyday observations can contribute to cutting-edge science. Sibley will explore the exciting and often overlooked mysteries surrounding even the most common bird species. \nDrawing from his own work and experience\, Sibley will illustrate how birders can develop a deeper connection to the birds around them by becoming “scientists in their own backyards.” He’ll share examples of how birding has led to surprising discoveries\, such as new migration routes or shifts in species distribution caused by climate change. Sibley will stress the importance of collaboration in the birding community\, showing how every observation matters and how collectively\, birders are helping to build a richer\, more comprehensive understanding of bird life. \nIn the end\, Sibley’s talk will not only encourage birders to look at their backyard birds with fresh eyes\, but also inspire them to become active participants in the ongoing work to protect these fascinating creatures and the habitats they rely on. \nThe Sibley Guide to Birds\, published in 2000\, was the realization of a lifelong dream for David Allen Sibley\, who began painting birds when he was seven years old and has continued painting them for over three decades. The Sibley Guide to Birds contains over 6\,600 original illustrations by Sibley\, now recognized as America’s leading ornithologist/illustrator. The Sibley Guide to Birds became the fastest-selling bird book in history\, earning Sibley the moniker “the Beatle of birding” among the press. Stories about Sibley have run in The New York Times\, Audubon\, Time\, and Science\, and the author has appeared on ABC World News Tonight and on NPR’s Science Friday and The Connection. David Allen Sibley has been called the heir apparent to John James Audubon and Roger Tory Peterson\, and his long-awaited guidebook immediately became the gold standard for bird identification when it was published. \nRegistration is preferred\, but not required.
