They come from a variety of countries and regions\, including Argentina\, Chile\, Colombia\, Costa Rica\, Cuba\, Haiti\, Honduras\, Mexico\, Peru\, Puerto Rico\, Spain\, and Venezuela. Students then created five-minute interviews that honor and reflect on these life stories\, cultural heritage\, and lived experiences. According to UVM student Olivia Ciocca\, where the interviewee was from influenced the content of the interview: “We made sure to ask questions about what it was like to be a Spanish speaker in Vermont and to learn about how they hold on to their culture.” \nThe portraits are now on display through October 16th in the Main Reading Room during the library’s open hours.

SUMMARY:The Resplendent Quetzal: Tourism and Land Use in Costa Rica - with Dr. Alan Poole
DESCRIPTION:This joint program\, co-sponsored by Brooks Memorial Library and Southeastern Vermont Audubon Society (SVAS)\, provides an accessible\, well-illustrated look at the life history of the Resplendent Quetzal — a dazzling\, legendary bird of the highland forests of Central America. Aztec and Mayan cultures revered this quetzal\, and today’s bird-watchers\, thousands of whom visit quetzal forests each year\, are only slightly less in awe. \nDr. Alan Poole\, the author of a recently published book on Resplendent Quetzals (Cornell Univ. Press\, 2023)\, will describe through the nesting ecology of this bird\, its role in Mayan and Aztec religions\, and how it fits into the increasingly threatened cloud forests that sustain it. The talk will also take a look at what lies ahead for this (and other) quetzals — how conservation efforts are giving them a boost\, and what threats Mesoamerican cloud forests are facing. \nAbove all this talk will examine land use in Central America\, especially Costa Rica\, through a quetzal lens — no species does more to bring current land use trends in this region into focus. Understanding these trends is key to maintaining the viability of highland tropical forests in the Americas\, and the quetzals that depend on them. \n++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ \nALAN POOLE\, an Associate of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, was editor of the Birds of North America life history series (18 volumes\, 18\,000 pages) for 22 years. He lives along the coast of southeastern Massachusetts\, and spends winters in the highlands of Costa Rica\, where quetzals are a highlight. \n++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ \nNote: This program will be at 7PM on Tuesday\, May 20 in the Main Reading Room\, and will take place instead of the monthly SVAS meeting.

SUMMARY:Mud Season Speaker Series with David Allen Sibley – Birding for Science: Uncovering the Mysteries of Our Feathered Neighbors
DESCRIPTION:In this final speaker series program co-hosted with Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center (BEEC)\, David Allen Sibley\, renowned ornithologist and illustrator\, invites backyard birders to step into the world of scientific discovery. While birdwatching is often seen as a leisurely hobby\, Sibley will reveal how everyday observations can contribute to cutting-edge science. Sibley will explore the exciting and often overlooked mysteries surrounding even the most common bird species. \nDrawing from his own work and experience\, Sibley will illustrate how birders can develop a deeper connection to the birds around them by becoming “scientists in their own backyards.” He’ll share examples of how birding has led to surprising discoveries\, such as new migration routes or shifts in species distribution caused by climate change. Sibley will stress the importance of collaboration in the birding community\, showing how every observation matters and how collectively\, birders are helping to build a richer\, more comprehensive understanding of bird life. \nIn the end\, Sibley’s talk will not only encourage birders to look at their backyard birds with fresh eyes\, but also inspire them to become active participants in the ongoing work to protect these fascinating creatures and the habitats they rely on. \nThe Sibley Guide to Birds\, published in 2000\, was the realization of a lifelong dream for David Allen Sibley\, who began painting birds when he was seven years old and has continued painting them for over three decades. The Sibley Guide to Birds contains over 6\,600 original illustrations by Sibley\, now recognized as America’s leading ornithologist/illustrator. The Sibley Guide to Birds became the fastest-selling bird book in history\, earning Sibley the moniker “the Beatle of birding” among the press. Stories about Sibley have run in The New York Times\, Audubon\, Time\, and Science\, and the author has appeared on ABC World News Tonight and on NPR’s Science Friday and The Connection. David Allen Sibley has been called the heir apparent to John James Audubon and Roger Tory Peterson\, and his long-awaited guidebook immediately became the gold standard for bird identification when it was published. \nRegistration is preferred\, but not required. SUMMARY:Meg Mott: What does the First Amendment Ask of Us?
DESCRIPTION:The right to protest is one of the people’s most fundamental freedoms\, but what about speech that veers toward lawlessness or social disorder? During most of the 20th century\, governments put speakers in jail for creating a “clear and present danger.” Under that rule\, Eugene Debs went to prison for denouncing the first World War and Charlotte Whitney went to jail for belonging to the Communist Party.  As far as the government was concerned\, their sentences were too dangerous to be heard in public. \nIn 1969\, the Supreme Court changed the rule. Only words that caused “immanent lawless action” could be suppressed. In the Brandenburg decision\, the ACLU successfully defended a Klansman\, giving all of us greater freedom from government prosecution. The Black and Jewish advocates who came to the aid of Clarence Brandenburg were able to see the principles of free speech beyond his racist and anti-Semitic rhetoric. \nThe question for us post-Brandenburg  is\, How can we love the principle even when we don’t like the speech? \nCo-sponsored by Windham World Affairs\, Vermont Humanities\, The Commons\, Vermont Independent Media: Voices Live\, and Brattleboro Community Television.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Landa Townsend: Mokuhanga Woodblock Prints
DESCRIPTION:“Throughout history\, art has mirrored the natural world\, drawing inspiration from its beauty and complexity. My artistic journey began with this very concept – a deep appreciation for the intricate details and vibrant colors found in nature. Witnessing the environmental challenges our planet faces compelled me to take a more proactive role. My art practice evolved from simply imitating nature to actively participating in its restoration. I found myself drawn to Japanese printmaking techniques\, particularly their emphasis on natural materials and meticulous craftsmanship. This resonated with my desire to create art that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally responsible. The traditional methods of Japanese woodblock printing\, for instance\, utilize water-based inks and handmade papers\, aligning perfectly with my commitment to sustainable practices.” — Landa Townsend \n“Dragonfly Habitat at the Edges of Weatherhead Hollow Pond: 2021-2024” by Landa Townsend\, Environmental Artist \nFrom August 3 – September 30\, 2024\, experience the vibrantly colored woodblock prints by Landa Townsend in the Main Reading Room of the Brooks Memorial Library. \nThis collection of prints is the result of two summers of research and observations of dragonfly flight patterns and behaviors\, primarily focusing on the Libellula lydia\, Libellula luctuosa\, and Libellula putchella populations at Weatherhead Hollow Pond in Guilford\, VT. \nAfter attending sustainable\, non-toxic printmaking workshops at the Two Rivers Printmaking Studio in White River Junction\, Vermont\, Townsend proceeded to create a series of abstract images representing this ecosystem. These woodblock prints vividly depict the dragonfly behaviors and environment of this vital and delicate ecosystem\, while exploring Japanese woodblock techniques that prioritize non-toxic and sustainable methods. \nThis project was made possible by an Artist Development Grant\, 2021-22\, with funding support from the Vermont Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. \nLanda Townsend is an acclaimed environmental artist known for her thought-provoking and immersive artworks that explore the intricate relationship between nature\, culture\, and humanity. With a deep passion for ecological restoration and a profound understanding of the interconnectivity of ecosystems\, Townsend creates captivating installations that invite viewers to contemplate their place within the natural world. \n  \n
