SUMMARY:Exploring the Afterlife: Learning from Experts and Personal Experiences
DESCRIPTION:Have you had a near-death experience or communicated with a deceased loved one through a medium? Have you contemplated the possibility of reincarnation or had an experience about a past life? Do you wonder what awaits us in the afterlife? Western culture tends to dismiss or even disparage paranormal phenomena. But evidence is available to answer many questions about the afterlife. \nIn this five-part evening series on Tuesdays from June 17th to July 15th\, we will do three things: 1) read books by experts on near-death experiences\, scientific instruments and experiments in paranormal research\, out-of-body experiences\, and the work of reputable mediums; 2) raise questions and concerns about the evening’s topic; and 3) share personal experiences of paranormal phenomena in a safe environment. Each participant will choose a book from a provided list to report on. Participants are strongly encouraged to attend all sessions. \nThe group will be led by hospice chaplain and former social worker Diane Southard and Valerie Abrahamsen\, author of Paranormal: A New Testament Scholar Looks at the Afterlife (2015). \nParticipants are encouraged to contact Valerie at www.wisdomwordsppf.org/contact/ as soon as possible to obtain the book list and additional information. Through a revolutionary method known as somaforming\, astronauts can survive in hostile environments off Earth using synthetic biological supplementations. They can produce antifreeze in subzero temperatures\, absorb radiation and convert it for food\, and conveniently adjust to the pull of different gravitational forces. With the fragility of the body no longer a limiting factor\, human beings are at last able to journey to neighboring exoplanets long known to harbor life. \nA team of these explorers\, Ariadne O’Neill and her three crewmates\, are hard at work in a planetary system fifteen light-years from Sol\, on a mission to ecologically survey four habitable worlds. But as Ariadne shifts through both form and time\, the culture back on Earth has also been transformed. DESCRIPTION:The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet Monday\, October 21st\, in the Quiet Reading Room from 7-8:30 pm to discuss Counterweight by Djuna. \n“On the island of Patusan—and much to the ire of the Patusan natives—the Korean conglomerate LK is constructing an elevator into Earth’s orbit\, gradually turning this one-time tropical resort town into a teeming travel hub: a gateway to and from our planet. Up in space\, holding the elevator’s “spider cable” taut\, is a mass of space junk known as the Counterweight. And it’s here that lies the key—a trove of personal data left by LK’s former CEO\, of dire consequence to the company’s\, and humanity’s\, future. \nRacing up the elevator to retrieve the data is a host of rival forces: LK’s disillusioned Chief of External Affairs; an unwitting everyman at the center of an investigation; the former CEO’s brilliant niece and his power-hungry son; and a violent officer from LK’s Security Division. They’re all caught in a labyrinth of fake identities\, neuro-implant “Worms\,” and old political grievances held by the Patusan Liberation Front.” \nThe Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Monday of every month and is open to curious minds of all ages\, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.
