Brattleboro Democracy Forum: Racism, Secrecy, Lies and the Ascent of Donald Trump

July 19, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Democracy Forum with Nick Biddle and friends

Racism, Secrecy, Lies and the Ascent of Donald Trump

at the Brooks Memorial Library and on Zoom

Tuesday, July 19, 2022, 6:30—8:00 pm.

Two overwhelming forces have combined to shape the Republican Party. The first is racism, America’s oldest, most damaging evil.  The second is secrecy compelled by the politics of nuclear weaponry.  Fifty-eight years ago the Republican Party embraced a strategy to attract white voters by appealing to racism against Blacks.  Fifty-eight years ago Democrats manufactured a lie about events in the Gulf of Tonkin to justify launching a war in Vietnam.  This presentation will demonstrate how the Republican use of racism and National Security secrecy and lies created the conditions that empowered Donald Trump and his very real threat to democracy.

Nick Biddle is a retired history professor and a Brattleboro resident since 2013.
