Teen Movie Night – The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

In belated honor of Pride Month, we will watch The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, a queer cult classic about a group of three drag performers taking their act on the road. Setting out in their ramshackle lavender bus, the trio travel from Sydney to the center of the Australian Outback for a big show. The movie will start at 7pm and has a 1 hour and 5 minute run time.

RATING INFORMATION:

This movie is Rated R. Teen Movie Nights are typically Rated PG-13, however The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert was made in the 90’s when cultural homophobia demanded an R rating for queer-centric stories. The following is from Common Sense Media’s overview of the film:

“Parents need to know that this funny drama about Australian drag queens contains tons of profanity and sexual innuendo. The cursing never stops, though it’s not generally hostile, and includes everything you could imagine (from “f–k” to homophobic slurs). There is no sex or nudity, but plenty of crass and explicit talk about genitals, sex (both homo- and heterosexual), and some provocative dancing and clothing. The characters encounter homophobia, and the film includes one scene of intense threatening and moderate violence.”
