A Literary Cocktail Hour – The Invisible Doctrine: The Secret History of Neoliberalism

March 14, 2025 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

The March Cocktail Hour is a collaborative ONLINE event with our host, the Windham World Affairs Council, and partner organizations: Vermont Independent Media, the Vermont Humanities, The Latchis, and Everyone’s Books, along with Brooks Memorial Library.

The book to be discussed is a Times UK #1 bestseller, “The Invisible Doctrine: The Secret History of Neoliberalism” with authors George Monbiot & Peter Hutchison.

George Monbiot and filmmaker Peter Hutchison show how a fringe philosophy in the 1930s—championing competition as the defining feature of humankind—was systematically hijacked by a group of wealthy elites, determined to guard their fortunes and power. Think tanks, corporations, the media, university departments and politicians were all deployed to promote the idea that people are consumers, rather than citizens.

A community screening of The Invisible Doctrine documentary followed by a Q & A with filmmaker Peter Hutchison is scheduled the next day, 3/15, at 5 PM at the Latchis.
