Drawing Community Stories with the Appalachian Comics Project

Join us for this special Vermont Humanities presentation about the Appalachian Comics Project and the creation of the graphic novel Islands in the Sky. Through this project, award winning artists were paired with community members to capture the oral histories of these people grappling with the effects of Hurricane Helene. Listen to writer, activist, and founder of this organization Andrew Aydin as he explores the power of reclaiming histories and narrative through this project.

About the Speaker

Andrew Aydin is a #1 New York Times bestselling author, a National Book Award winner, a Robert F. Kennedy Book Award Honoree, a Printz Award winner, a Sibert Medal winner, a Walter Dean Myers Award winner, a three-time Eisner award winner, and the recipient of multiple Coretta Scott King honors. Andrew is the founder of the Appalachia Comics Project, co-founder of Good Trouble Productions, creator and co-author of the graphic memoir series March and Run, which chronicle the life of civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis, the writer of Taste of Justice from DC Comics as well as co-author of the upcoming graphic memoir of renowned Gullah Geechee Chef Sallie Ann Robinson. Andrew lives in Edneyville, North Carolina.
